What I did today 2012-2014

After feeding the chooks and collecting the eggs I retired to the greenhouse. Just managed to get my garlic watered and a trayful of shallots planted up when the darkness was upon me!

Yesterday Son and I moved a few pieces of black plastic to solarise some more African Hate Grass, and a hundred or so tyres to weight the plastic down. Had more to do today but has gotten too hot already.

Horses are stickybeaks, and missing daughter who is at school camp all week, so spent half the day pushing a horse out of the way to get at things. Hotlips still hasn't laid her first egg - come on!

Today it's not looking good, but I desperately need to get a couple of things done. Why is it that the good weather turns up when I'm at work?

VC it's not the small furry things darting out of the compost that worries me, it's the long thin slithery ones.........apparently they 'overwinter' in the warm compost

Donned my workman's coat again and hacked my way through brambles - hoping to clear a paved area where we used to sit in the evenings - long disused now Filled 2 wheelie bins for collection tomorrow and piled up some more to fill the bins again. The ground is so soft that many of the brambles could be pulled out, roots and all.
I'm ripped and bleeding but made a lot of headway and I'm happy
Lots of long-tailed tits flitting through the trees and the inevitable robin for company.

Picked the last of the raspberries and planted a blueberry

Lit the woodburner in the greenhouse to try and defrost the windows!

Only had wet wood but managed to get it going so it should burn for a while.

Jumping hot here - hope our plants are surviving the heat! Where's our storms we was promised!

Had a lovely salad today with the lettuce, radish and snowpeas from the garden. Will need to take out the rainbow chard now daughter is home so we can enjoy that.

Dug up a dozen raspberry canes which had migrated into the asparagus bed and took them round to friends. Started trimming the dead stuff off the border ready to give it a good mulching. Picked a bowlful of salad leaves from the poly.

Ground still permafrost so busied myself cleaning the chooks out, adding fresh bedding and filling their feeders up. (Had to break the ice on there water troughs) They really enjoyed the bread and mixed corn I gave them before I left.

Turned egg shells into faces with the kids and put cress seeds inside to grow as 'hair' they kept looking every few seconds to see if it had grown

actually went to lotty today (it WAS sunny): took up 3 bags of compost fillings, 4 big sacks of leaves and brought home a cabbage

Cut down my sweet peas and added them to the compost bin, the ground was too frozen to do anything else.

Today and yesterday we inherited a filing cabinet from an ex plot holder, so thats been put to use in the shed, and we've had a good clear out in there. It's tidy!

We also got a load of yellow pipes and netting, so have made a cage around some of the brassicas. Looks pretty good, considering we spent no time planning it. Weeded the woodchip paths and added more wood chip. Did more weeding and tidying. It's all looking pretty smart now.

Did a bit of weeding, and spread some muck on some of the borders. Plenty more of that needed though.

Earthed up my GH potatoes (4 sacks)
Planted out in the GH border, seedlings of Broccoli sessanta, Misticanza and Oriental Mustards.
