What I did today 2012-2014

House work in the morning
At the plot, planted out my runner beans, celeriac, romanesco, lettuce, 100 leeks, PSB. Bought some well-rotted cow manure (took delivery of same) and then used some as a 'base' for my courgettes. Back there in a bit to mould up potatoes, net the romanesco and PSB against pigeons and butterflies (just erected a temporary defence yesterday - I was too pooped to do much else).

Came home, watered greenhouse and plants in conservatory then collapsed in a soggy heap.

I just had time to hang out my laundry to make good use of the big shiny thing in the sky before going to work.

Today I watered everything. The strawberries are going great guns. Put sweetcorn in the cloche to harden off. Planted out 2 more squashes. Bought 2 Aubergine plants from our allotment seedling sale, cost me 50p put those in the cloche. Then stood around chatting, catching some rays.

This afternoon I'm off to best friends for a BBQ and a glass or two of cider. Happy days!

Quick trip to the allotment in the rain (jealous of you lucky people on the mainland getting sun today).

Anyway, found my newly transplanted calabrese and PSB in varying states of slug devastation. This is in spite of the copper-infused collars, crushed egg shells, and an outer circle of wool pellets. In desperation I chopped up some comfrey and mulched all around the plants - hoping the hairy leaves of the comfrey might keep the slugs off for a while.

Dug over and weeded a couple of greenhouse beds. Added four large trug frulls od home made compost.
Planted out San Marzano tomatoees and good old Moneymaker tomatoes. Also planted a Gherkin plant at the end of one row.

Carried more trug fulls of compost and in each set a cucumber, two squash and a courgette to keep my pumpkin and cucumber happy, all in one large bed.

Gave copious amounts of water to each transplant and covered with various plastic covers.

Put my cabbage and kale plants in a dog cage to harden off and keep the pigeons off them

Planted out fourteen tomato plants.

Watered all the transplants.

Was happy to see squashes were still there.

Tidyed garden hut out (fought with some tarantulas ) transferred toms from 3" pots to 5. Is that ok to do that. Oh and built a cold frame. Wife says it's too big for the garden. I do get carried away.

Built my brassica cage then planted out Black Kale, sprouts, dwarf Kale, in bed 3 I planted chard seedlings.

Planted out hardened off runners and more lettuces and took a chance on two Marketmore cucumbers with protection.
Due to the slugs rampaging through my beds I am experimenting with different methods. Some beans are planted through trays with gravel round them, some through Large bottomless yoghurt pots that have been cut round the top with pinking shears and are very sharp. The lettuces went into the ground with bottomless black pots over them, also with the edges sheared and pretty sharp. (Googled and it was a suggestion, although it also said spray top with WD40 so the blighters can't grip - haven't done that bit as don't want too many chemicals near the soil)
As all beds are completely netted I have no fear of birds getting to the slugs so in order to make it a fair trial I have put a few bio pellets IN and around the pots to kill off any that were lurking in the soil. Will not repeat pellets unless there are obvious signs that my deterrents are not working.
I am hoping that once that's controlled I will be able to tell if the other methods work to keep them off.

Planted out the squashes I bought yesterday.

Planted out broccoli seedlings, now about6inches high, covered all with netting.

Pulled up more potatoes growing thru onions.

Died some radishes and spring onion,between sprouts n broccoli.

Watered plot.

Reorganised "Chaos Corner". Seems I'd got all the heights a bit wrong. Unfortunately this puts my Globe Artichoke a couple of pots back, which makes harvesting without damaging other plants quite tricky. If the worst happens, at least the flowers will look nice and attract pollinators

Also made a support rail for the GA to stop the leaves flopping over

Put up the bean frame, and gave the brassica beds a quick dressing, pulled the flower heads off about 200 dandelions on the plot next door.

Today I...

Forgot to take a picture of how the plot is looking... But finally got in the remainder of my onions that I'd started in cells, dug over bed #5 ready for the climbing french beans and mangetout in about ten days time, and did a spot of weeding. I also have hundreds of dandelions covering the second half of my plot and need to spend some time taking the heads off before they seed everywhere!

Now looking forward to a few days off at the end of the month, when I should be able to get everything else planted up.

Pottered in the garden today as still a bit under the weather. Moved more tomatoes into final pots and potted on chilli plants. Back to the plot on Tuesday.
Finally rounded of the day with the first ripe strawberry from the garden 😋
