  • Finished making my final raised bed, forked over the soil and then started barrowing in soil to fill it. Still another half dozen barrowloads or so needed but that can wait till tomorrow. Plot is now starting to take shape but after a winter of slobbing about, I'm way out of practice and my muscles need hardening up. Now, where is my beer?

          • Not today, because between the rain, hail, and the fact I was busy most of the daylight hours, I didn't manage to nip down the lottie, but I made it down for the first time in a while on Friday. Gulped at the shed window that'd blown in, I need to replace that asap.

Planted out a new rhubarb from one of those bags (having finally found a local garden centre that didn't store them inside in a heated area, thus turning them into rhubarb crisp). I should have got two, or maybe I can plant something else big and perennial in the bed, perhaps a globe artichoke? I don't know if I like eating them, but they look great!

Had a quick go at plot part B, which I'm way behind on -dug out a bit more bamboo planted by the crazy neighbour, along with the cypress hedge. There's just not been enough dry weather, and I seem to be working whenever there is, so I hope I can get up to speed before the council inspects it. At least the ground's soft!

Then came home as the rain started up for the nth time, and had a nice look through the seed stash. Shame I appear to have lost my notebook, so I couldn't work out the year's plan to ignore later

              "Conference" pear tree pruned.

              Planted 3 bushes of each:
              "Ben Nevis" blackcurrent
              "Jonkheer van Tets" redcurrent
Had a general tidy up as well. Great to be outside!!

                    • Fruit trees are in at Aldi now for £3.99 each! A range of apples, plus Czar plum. And they have packs of 3 x fruit bushes for £2.49. Get yersens down there! I bought 3 thornless blackberries, 3 goosegogs and a Jonagold apple tree and still had change from a tenner.

                      • Pricked out one of the peppers that was up. Put the rest back on the heat. Called in at the lotty as I was passing on my way back from the school run. Just to make sure it was still there And yes it is!!

                        • What I did today . . . . nothing !

Blasted weather and weather forecast . . . was meant to be a nice day today . . .

Tomorrow was also forecast to be good, and now the forecasters have changed their minds. So tomorrow I'm going to my plot regardless . . . if I get wet I get wet, I'm so close to finishing my last bed.

                            • All I managed tonight was to fix up a bit of trellis, and move 4 rather heavy planters

                              • Finally managed to get in touch with the woman who rents the neglected plot next to mine! I offered to look after it for her (she is living away at the mo) but she told me she has now officially given it up. Felt sorry for her and disappointed as I'd got excited at the thought of babysitting a second allotment. But never mind - I guess I can look forward to some new neighbours this Spring.
