I did learn a lot,I'm not interested in showing either,but I will put their container growing ideas to the test next year.I grow organically so liked the ideas of getting veg in good condition without using chemicals,by covering everything and not having to worry about carrot fly and cabbage white caterpillars.
If they grow big,that's fine as long as they taste good.

tomato gold dust...

did anyone else watch the gardeners world special this fri about growing show veg? i was just wondering what was the 'gold dust' that they used with the carrots. the man said he uses that kind of fertilizer on his tomatoes every year and i was curious to know what it was.

With vegetables, it's not the looks or size that matter, it's what you do with them..

I didn't actually see the programme, but a few weeks ago I went to my first (and to be honest, probably last) veg show - it was the Dundee Food and Flower Show, and the National Vegetable Society were having a championship competition there.

Well, it was an experience, that's for sure! I did actually find it fascinating, all this stuff I'd never seen before ... the leeks looked like TREES for goodness sake! ... and the way they'd made veg into artistic displays was incredible.

Thing is, to me it didn't look real and I didn't fancy eating any of it. I personally would get absolutely zero satisfaction out of forcing vegetables into uniformity and polishing them. I just don't see the point.

That said, however, I firmly believe in "to each, his own". My work colleagues verbally torture me about my newfound interest in growing veg and rip the p*** out of me constantly. So if these folks want to shampoo celery, well I doubt I'd be able to stop myself laughing but hey-ho, takes all sorts eh! (I detest celery so they're welcome.)

So, yep, that veg show in Dundee was certainly a bit of an eye-opener for me!

i must say i loved the programme and that lovely guy from Wales who had enthusiasm and encouragement in bucketfulls I'd love to see more of him and really genuine people like him as cameos on the shows.
What the show did for me was renew and revitalise my interest. I can't see myself ever being good enough to show veg, but after a few years when one veggie or another have failed I now feel so enthused again that hubby has bought me a 'super 10'propogator for my birthday Roll on next growing season, and here's wishing we had more progs for gardeners of all types and interests

I dug around after the program and found Nutrimate here (NutriMate), the tub looks remarkably similar to the one Joe was holding.

Further research shows it available in 20kg bags at around �45 incl VAT & delivery. More expensive than the dust in earlier post but it needs around 40-70 gm/m2 - about 1/10th of the above so much cheaper than the dust or tub that Joe used.

OH couldn't get over the parsnips and carrots. That welsh guy could do with a spot on GW . That'd liven it up a bit
