Berner Rose tomatoes

I'm going to have a go at growing these outdoors next year, I have no greenhouse so they will have to endure the unpredictibility of the Scottish weather however I am assured they are fairly well adapted to slightly colder climes.

Anyone grown these before without a greenhouse and any tips?

Looks like it's the same variety as Rose de Berne - Absolutely love them and a fixture on my yearly tomato list. I have seeds in the swap as well!

I see your researching a lot of toms, this is a very useful tomato database, don't know if you've seen it before!

Aye, I came across that one a week or so ago. Thanks for the link - I've got so many saved in my favourites that they tend to get lost.

Someone said you could order seeds from there, but I haven't managed to work out how to do it. (My youngest insists I'm turning into an old dear - I think he may be right!)

I think I'll probably go for Glacier, Stupice and Maskotka with Grumpy's �5 T&M voucher and I'm drooling copiously over Berner Rose, Brandywine Pink, Cherry Fox, Golden Queen, Yellow Submarine, Tiny Tim and Saint Pierre from MoreVeg.

I'm thinking more of some different black types, can't resist! Sounds like a good selection, what about 'ordinary' red salad toms though?

I've sown Gardener's Delight (quelle surprise ), Moneymaker, Tumbling Tom Red, Minibel and Tamina for salads, Principe Borghese for drying and Il San Marzano Lungo for cooking.

My Tamina are very old. I hope they germinate. They performed well for me in previous years.

Which ones are you going for?

Eeee, I've grown plenty of 'different' tomatoes in my time, but when the weather is bad, like the two years I tried St. Pierre if you're unlucky you get nowt! So I now try to balance between doers we like and one or two risky newbies.

Cos for sure I get the itch to grow lots of different types but most of all I like to have tomatoes that grow, so this year we're going for: 2 of each so we'll have spares

Matina sounds a lot like Tamina (specially since I'm dyslexic!)

I'm trying PW's French Black and Sungold and a kind grape is sending me a couple of Black Cherry seeds. I'll have to goggle Ananas Noire, Golden Surprise, Falcorosso and Harbinger. What are Zazen's 'Collioure plum'?

Black Sea Man is a wonderful name.

Matina are not a dyslexic's version of Tamina! They're a very tasty 'standard size' red tom which keep on cropping really well until 1st frosts in the greenhouse. I tried Tamina last year and they were a bit sickly looking as plants so ditched them before they even flowered!

Ask Zazen about the 'collioure plum' toms, she bought some seeds back from a holiday in France. They grow into big, tasty paste toms.

Harbinger are another standard tasty red tom, but when we were losing lots of 'fancy toms' to blight they kept on going.

Ananas noire are anything but standard and taste fabulous, but sometimes in bad weather you don't get many/any to a plant.

I fancy another or so black tomato plant cos last year we made 'black tomato chutney' and it was very tasty indeed!
