Growing Mange Tout

I planted about 100 pea seeds for manage tout last weekend, and some are starting to poke out the ground, I was reading the other day that I needed to support them as they grow.

Does anybody know what I need to use to support them?

how tall are they going to grow...if i grow dwarf peas i use twiggy sticks but i'm growing a pea called Caractacus this year and its supposed to be a climber so i've made a frame like i make for beans but will add strings..... (violins? no bits of string..)

I have never grown manage tout b4 untill this year that is. I was reading somewhere on here, (sorry I cant remember which thread!) not sure if all types but some can grow to 6ft or so! you can always use long canes or if near a fence or wall get some pea and bean netting fixed to the fence for them to climb up!

The variety of mange tout I am growing gets about 4 feet high.
I'm just going to support it the same way I do the peas - put a cane at each end of each row and tie about 3 rows of twine across. It's all they need.

I think I will try that, it will save me getting the netting So far my managetout are still in the greenhouse in loo rolls. I have 5 out of 6 germinated, I think that will do as there is only me to feed! They are doing well, thay are about 5-6 inches tall now. I don't want to put them out just yet in cace we have a heavy frost! I think I will leave them for another couple of weeks but will start bring them out in the day then in at night to harden them off soon.

I caned and twined a couple of years ago. They kept collapsing with the weight! I now use the thick rigid plastic netting with canes threaded in and out and pushed into the round. Much more solid and you can re-use ( I am this year).

I'm going to use pea netting - 50p a meter for a 2 meter width, in a 4 meter long ridge tent sort of arrangement. I reckon if I plant the seeds inside the 'tent' it'll keep the birds away!!

I'm using reinforcing mesh for concrete fastened between two steel tubes hammered into the ground!

If it wil hold the weight of a 20 storey hotel it should hold the weight of my mange tout!

btw the peas and the broadies under the lime line are now a couple of inches tall!

White blotches on my mange tout leaves should I be worried, plants look OK otherwise ?

Sounds like powdery mildew. It's worse in the damp - not been very damp here yet! I usually get a bit of it - the peas are still ok to eat but it doesn't look too good.

i planted mine last month using canes for some and nettiing for the rest. i would wait till they are a nice large size before planting as i found out to my cost slugs devour them in no time at all.i used slug pots and planted more than needed but to no avail. 2nd lot now in trays awaiting planting, to be fair 3 or 4 of the originals did make a come back so good luck.
