It's getting a tad late, michelle - the only variety I know is fine for March planting is Solent Wight, and it ain't cheap!

I read that its better just to plant the large cloves to grow, but can put in smaller cloves and grow for the greens on top

Or you can use the small cloves as companion plants with, e.g. tomatoes or carrots
