  • What fruit and veg have you grown for Xmas?

So far we have homegrown spuds, leeks, peas onions as well as pear and apple. Certainly not as much as usual.
We do have pumpkin or nettle soup if anyone fancies a light lunch today .

So…What produce did you grow that are you proudly putting on the table this festive season?

I don't do a family meal at Christmas (my brother has that privilege), but the home grown produce that I am using over the holiday season includes potatoes, onions, leeks, carrots, parsnips, PSB, beetroot, lettuce, mizuna, satsumas, lemons and a few scrag end tomatoes that have been ripening on the windowsill. There are also plenty of tomatoes, peas, summer fruits and soups in the freezer.

For Christmas dinner and the christmas/new year period generally we had homegrown potatoes, parsnip, swede, cabbage, sprouts, carrots, peas (frozen in the summer), beetroot, apple.... and various bits of fruit from the freezer.

My aim is to try and get all the Christmas veg from the garden, because I think it makes it all the more special.

I've never had any luck with onions or leeks! Which is frustrating! Any tips on those would be great.

Onions and leeks are not too much different to grow than your parsnips and cabbages. I sowed my onions yesterday but any time till end March would be OK. They do have some specific pests being white rot ( https://www.rhs.org.uk/disease/onion-white-rot) and allium leaf miner (https://www.rhs.org.uk/biodiversity/allium-leaf-miner).

OH decided to cook our largest pumpkin today so we have loads of soup and roasted onion and pumpkin today go into the freezer . We’ve held back some to crumble in chestnuts, lardons and homemade croutons to have with homemade crusty bread.
            A full meal in itself!

Not sure which pumpkin variety but it was green with deep vertical ridges and a very orange flesh. Not grown from seed sadly but from a very small plant. Still, it was clearly well nurtured by OH and were really looking forward to tucking into it over the next few weeks.

Thank you Mark! Where do you keep them once you have sown them? In an unheated greenhouse, warm kitchen? My cottage is pretty cold generally and I germinate my chillies on the hearth next to my log burner as it's probably the warmest place!

I generally keep them in a cold but frost free conservatory on a window ledge.
