  • Your favourite strawberry varieties please.

My strawberries need replacing this winter, so I am on the hunt for the best tasting strawberries ever. Early, mid, late, everbearer, I'd love some of each.
If have a fav that you think is utterly delicious please tell me

I have no idea what varieties I have as I've been lucky enough to get gifted runners from fellow plotters. I've always seem Cambridge Favourite reviewed as a reliable mid season. Wimbledon use early/maincrop Mailing Centenary

I kind of feel as if I should have Cambridge favourite. If they're good enough for Wimbledon I'll add Malling Centenary to my list! Thanks Andraste.

I had some really delicious ones from Asda's posh range last year and I am certain I made a note of the name, but can I find it now!

If you saw them again in the shop, could you sow the seeds from some of them and see if they're any good?

It's got to be worth a try hasn't it.

I really like Frau Mieze Schindler (otherwise known as "framberry" or "strasberry") that popped up in my plot a few years ago. I've read it needs a pollinator, but there must be plenty around here because I don't have trouble getting a decent crop. If I only had one strawberry, this would be the one.

If you don't mind somewhat meagre crops, Royal Sovereign is a nice, good-flavoured old-fashioned variety.

I haven't tried growing Malling Centenary because they are so easy to buy, but I do like them.

I have yet to find early or late season crops that pass my taste test, but Marshmello is a mid season variety that is excellent. An everbearer that I discovered a couple of years ago that has exceptional flavour is Mara De Bois, which is effectively a wild strawberry with large fruit.

Another interesting variety is Just Add Cream, which is meant to be an everbearer and has pink flowers. The fruit are gorgeous but the plants are very temperamental and not very prolific.

I would second framberries as an excellent alternative - the fruit is small and does not keep well, but they are delicious.

Thank you ChingfordHarry framberry is now on my list

Thank you Penellype I have heard of marshmello and mara de bois, both going on the list along with your just add cream, I've always fancied a pink flowered variety. Whilst I have your attention, can I ask after how many weeks do you harvest your Lady Christl potatoes, I know they're a favourite of yours.

                  Best: Mara des Bois.

Pros: best flavour hands down, intense sweetness and very fragrant.
Cons: the fruit are not huge, perhaps an inch across the shoulders at most, but they produce a decent crop. Don't throw out many runners

                  Next best: Florence

Early crop: Honeoye if grown under cover. I grow hanging baskets in the polytunnel, 3 plants per basket
