  • Surprise haul of fully mature Charlotte potatoes.

I've done test digs every 10 days or so since early May (usual harvest date) and found nothing, Today: over a kilo of mature spuds off one plant!

OK, but was hoping for a boiling of baby new potatoes.

    Been a strange year.
I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

Ours too Nicos. Bit of a shame but we've had plenty from them and what's left contributes to the compost so all is not lost

            • Having been dry for weeks, it's been 10℃, windy and raining pretty non-stop for the last few days. Consequently my vegetable plot is mostly producing slugs at the moment. I did manage to wrestle enough lettuce, radishes etc for a salad off them today though.

              • 1kg each of strawberries and mangetout.
Also decided to dig up a couple of my rather diminutive Swift potato plants, and got just 365g between them. Its not like they were immature, as a couple of them where quite large potatoes. They just barely produced anything, presumably because the top growth was also very small and weak. I'm not really sure what was wrong with them. They did get frosted a little back in May, but then so did my potatoes last year, and they recovered just fine. I'm going to chalk it up to bad seed potatoes, as my Charlottes and Rooster are growing strongly.

                • Slugs for the chickens.
The weather was the kind of rain that makes the slugs crawl in broad daylight so it was cull time with the hens doing rugby tackles to win themselves nice easy to eat fresh food.

                    • Watercress, been quite good this year, also some cut and come again lettuce and radishes, spring onions looking poor this year sadly. Broad beans to go with tomorrows dinner.

                          • Small bowl of strawberries yesterday. There was a female blackbird helping herself to one at lunchtime,it was nice to watch, there’s plenty to share. Lifted all my garlic two days ago & some of the red onions, they’re drying in the shed now.
