    More miner's lettuce for lunch.
It sure is hardy. It froze completely solid last night, both leaves and the compost it's in, but come lunch time it was just the same as before, like nothing had happened.

I'd recommend it. Each individual plant doesn't grow very big, so you sow them close and give them a haircut every now and again to harvest them. They grow very quickly; the only pests they are bothered by are slugs and snails; they are very winter hardy (winter purslane is their other name); they have a mild, slightly sweet flavour, much like actual lettuce (they're not actually related) and the leaves are slightly fleshy; and unlike many salad leaves they are just as tasty and tender even once they start going to seed (which they will quickly quickly in the summer).

The only thing I should warn you about is that they self-seed like nothing I have ever seen. In a way, that's a good thing, as it means I don't need to sow any, but it also means that after having grown (and allowed to set seed) two large-ish pots of it on my patio last year, this year I now have it coming up in quite literally every single pot on the patio (of which there are many), including even ones which were filled with fresh compost this year, so shouldn't even have been exposed to the seeds (I suspect insects may be transporting them), as well as in every crack in the patio and every small pile of debris in every corner.

I like the idea of miners lettuce
Our cold winters would control it!

              Today I picked lambs lettuce.
The frost got most of it but this bit had escaped....yum!

I know Miners lettuce is a different plant to land cress but it sounds like it has the same habit I've got land cress growing just about all over my garden, GH, containers and patio.

For those interested, I just looked up the hardiness of miner's lettuce and apparently the mature plants are hardy to -6c.
