hi everyone
sowed my carrotts (nantes) as instructed on back of packet. they were coming along nicely until now - a massive slug attack = no plants left.
my question is am i too late to sow more!
i don't use slug pellets because of 1 dog, 2 chickens ,4 grandchildren and trying to be organic!. i have tried a beer trap but that doesn't work for me, anyone got any more slug trapping ideas!

I have my own garden and use my neighbours too, with a long old wall running between the two. The snail population is ridiculous and were eating everything to the ground, leaving me with little sticks of cabbages, caulis, etc. Had to restort to blue pellets then covered with cheap net from the pound shop to stop the birds eating the fizzy snails and from our dogs getting in there. The other week we picked up 200 in one morning but I am noticing a drop in numbers now.

I am using organic slug pellets, they seem to do the job shame they don't see off the flutterbies though

I popped out and bought some more cheap nets this afternoon. The Cabbage Whites are becoming as big a nuisance as the snails, grrr!

Did you see the article in GYO mag - bran works a treat apparently. I'm going to try it today on some seedlings I've planted out...fingers crossed.

Note the bit about putting it too close to the plant - acts as a mulch and your beloved plants could rot so leave a little gap.

I hadn`t had any problems with slugs until I transplanted my peppers into the garden, now I keep finding slug-slime and holes in the peppers. I might have to resort to slug pellets too as the peppers are disapearing fast.

Ive tried the bran and it didnt really work for me, i have bought some copper tape much cheaper that the actual rings and so far so good, nothing that i taped up has been touched (haved i just jinxed myself), i bought a roll from my local garden centre for �6.99 and then found a good buy on ebay �2.99 free p&p, and bigger than in the garden centre.

Egg shells or a course sharp grit around your plants should help to detract slugs and snails. I have also had some success by planting in pots, tubs and raised beds. Hardly any damage to the hostas now they are in large pots.

Have heard that crushed walnut shells work a treat. I haven't tried it but we have 8 huge walnut trees in our garden & not a snail to be seen under the trees. Previous owners dumped all their shells under the trees & we haven't got round to clearing the area yet.

I have left a small wild bit on my lottie & I have a small pond in the area too.
I also have frogs & very few slugs.

Not sure if it's too late to re sow but as for slugs, we use organic pellets made by Growing Success. They are animal/pet and child friendly. They are also safe for chickens too. We used to keep a few hens and they were fine. Infact they hardly eat any.
They are also 'rain hardy' too so the rain doesn't wash them away. They are a bit expensive but well worth the money.

Just went out to get the cat again, ended up killing two slugs and about fifteen snails
