killing trees

we have chopped down some hawthorn trees and a hedge, and a few other not healthy trees, ...... and now they are sprouting everywhere don't want to dig the roots up, as they stop the back of the garden, and hence my veggie patch, sliding down a hill, is there a way of killing the roots, without effecting the veg? or do i have to wait till all the veg has grown, then do it?

I got rid of some tree stumps using stump rot that I got from Wilko's. I just had to wear gloves and rub the crystals into some grooves I cut in the top of the stump and them leave then to it to do their work. The good thing was that once they had started to rot they actually fertilized the soil according to the blurb on the packet.

But if you kill the roots the roots will rot and your garden and veg patch will slide down the hill, especially with all the rain you get up there.

I've heard of people drilling a hole down into the stump and pouring salt into the hole.

Can you not compromise and keep it as a well controlled hedge? As soon as you kill off all the top growth the roots will deteriorate and cease holding the soil together.

I'm lazy too lol, the hedge has been there for 40 odd years, i really don't want to think how deep they are, and i need it out of the way, cos eventually i will have the chicken shed and greenhouse over the top ...... it's only collapsing at the moment, cos they are building an industrial estate out the back, so have dug all the supporting soil away, eventually they will put all the soil back, so it will be stable, so the roots rotting won't be a problem, though them growing back will be.

well the salt sounds good and cheap i'll think i'll try that and have a look for the crystals if that doesn't work

Do they have any of those yellow plastic storage units on the road nearby? You could always "borrow" some from one of those.

can't think of any, not something i've ever actually looked for lol ...... but i'll definitely be looking out for one now
