  • Help with broad Beans

Hello everyone, i have sucessfully grown some broad beans, can anyone tell me if i can plant these in a large crate about 18inches deep. my garden is concrete and rented so I have no groud soil, and how far apart do they need to be please.

They should be OK - I've grown them in 12 inch deep pots before.

About 6 inches apart (all round) would just about work if you have limited space. I have seen even closer spacing recommended, but I'm not convinced.

They will be fine if you watch the watering regime.

Lose an inch of depth to get some proper drainage gravel in the base, I usually put a little weed fabric over the gravel so that the soil does not wash into it over time.

Then keep the soil moist and feed once a month, a light mulch will help retain the moisture.

Finally, what material is the tub made from ?

If it is clay, it is porous and leaches the water out from it, so paint the inside with a diluted PVA adhesive ( remember the white glue you used at school ) and this will seal it. You can seal the outside as well and it protects it from frost in winter.

      Good luck and enjoy
      Darren
