What I did today - 2019

Potted up 7 butternut squash seedlings that had germinated in my heated propagator.
They grow very fast once they begin, there was nothing there two days ago and this morning the tallest one was trying to lift the lid.

I built a raised bed for the first time. It was a lot easier than I expected, thanks to an electric screwdriver.



The other day when I collected a dozen bin bags full of leaves, I topped up these builders bags that were already cock a block with them.

Cleaned largest years plant labels then potted on my toms.

Today's job is to plant my 5 Stewart's Purple asparagus which arrived today

Then this evening I'm going to write labels out for the seeds I'm going to be sowing in the coming days

Checked on the pond I dug in 3 weeks ago, all the rain has filled it nicely (about 8 inches deep). Current approximately 40% water, 40% frog spawn and 20% frogs Dropped a water hawthorn in hoping to get some nice flowers for the insects. Pulled up the last of the brassicas, mostly bolted otherwise pigeoned to death Hoed 3 beds ready for parsnips, spuds and beetroot.

*phew* Digging out a 7ft x 3ft bed takes longer than you think Finally managed to do it just before it started to get dark so chucked in some well-rotted manure and compost and tomorrow I'll build up the ridges and get the crowns planted.

Oh no.....didn't know about gravel!!!!! Though the allotment IS very free draining and never floods or has areas of standing water. Previous tenant had the whole plot so well looked after and the soil is fabulous to work with. I've got a bag of gravel in the greenhouse so perhaps I'll scoop out the compost & manure (C&M) first thing tomorrow morning, chuck the gravel down and put the c&m back on top Then I'll get the crowns in place and cover them up.

I've got another variety of Asparagus ordered which should be dispatched by the end of April so I'll make sure I've got my second bed dug and ready long before that!

Our dog would have dug that for you. Always starts digging when we're digging in the garden. Just trying to help. Bit irritating though when it's in the lawn.......

I looked after a chihuahua-terrier cross for a fortnight a few years back and she was a little so....tinker for digging holes (obviously the terrier in her ) and I had to keep the newly-sown beds in the polytunnel covered in chicken wire cloches.

Had a lovely hour in the sun trying to jeri rig a dodgy obelisk so the smallest breeze won’t blow the scrawny thing over. At least said obelisk (isn’t that a lovely word) isn’t living in my bedroom anymore.

Today's been busy! I took a tray of purple scarlet kale up to the allotment, and planted them, along with two first earlies and one type of second early. I should get some mains potatoes too I suppose, but I don't eat that many of them. I emptied the van of all the freebie wood and garden furniture I picked up yesterday.

Some of my fruit trees have branches that point straight up, which isn't so helpful, so I brought a few small drinks bottles filled with water, tied string around them and hung them on the branches, which should hopefully train them to grow more horisontally.

I planted my 8 asparagus plants from Wilko (�2 for 2 crowns) in my new bed on the new plot as it's a bit higher up and not too wet.

I brought two freebie metal shelves I'd dropped off up at the allotment yesterday for storage in the shed. Found one was too tall to stand upright in the shed LOL

Weeded in random places where bindweed is popping up. The nettles are growing like mad, but I'm happy to let them grow on a bit before I reap the harvest for liquid feed

Home now and knackered, but what a lovely sunny day it's been

Divided up the skirret I grew from seed last year, replanted 12 pieces into two tall pots in my greenhouse. These are the same pots I have used for carrots so should give good long roots.

Planted out some Carlin peas and Golden Gourmet shallots at the allotment.

Potted up Marigolds and Nasturtiums.

Dug over another section of the plot then planted out 5 rows of spuds, earlies second earlies and mains.

Moved the weed fabric over to another section and wished I'd brought the brush cutter/hedge trimmer as the day was much better than expected.

Unfortunately my son then stood on one of the little gooseberry bushes and snapped off the second fork so I've popped that into some water in the hope that it will root and I can get two smaller bushes.
