  • Germination issues/failures and tips

I thought it might be handy to have a thread where we can discuss germination issues/failures and hopefully get some advice and tips from people who have successfully germinated the same seeds.

I have been trying to grow garlic chives for two years. Last year I managed to get 3 to germinate, this year zero. They were sown indoors in mpc, kept at room temp, not in a prop. Lightly covered in compost.

Any suggestions as to how to get the pesky things to grow please

When I did some I just sowed into a pot outside I think. I'll check my notes tomorrow for when I sowed but I've got a feeling it was at least this time of year or maybe towards the end of May .......

Garlic chives are tricky indoors. I've had much better luck sowing them outside in a pot once the weather warms up a bit, they seem to want the natural temperature fluctuations. Indoors they just sit there and sulk.

Seems my notes on the Garlic Chives aren't the best They look to have done best from a mid-late April sowing outdoors into a pot & the only time they didn't sprout was when I tried to start them indoors.

Edit to add: I didn't do anything special, just into MPC & kept moist (although I doubt very much I paid a lot of attention to that)

Did a second sowing of chives about a fortnight ago as the first lot did nothing. So I basically put the rest of the packet in the pot out of frustration, way too many to be honest, but there's a few coming through now. I have resorted to buying pots of chives from the garden centre in the past.

I've had the same chives (not garlic) from a piece from my parents garden forever . In a tub that's been split to more tubs.

Garlic chives I may try sowing again. .
