Growing Comfrey from Seed.

I have received the bocking 14 root cuttings now and as my plot isn't quite ready yet I was going to start them off in pots first then find somewhere to plant them out.
Can I start them off at any time indoors or is there a best month to do it?

I stuck mine in pots when the arrived. The are tough as old boots, but maybe put them somewhere frost free. They won't need any light, until they have sprouted, so a shed/garage will do (but keep an eye on them and move them to light once they do).

I wouldn't give them any heat - they will get under way and before you know it be a problem to look after!

I popped mine (Bocking 14) into a pot with some MP compost in the summer of 2014, they grew strongly, then went into the ground up the lottie in early autumn then died back in winter. I can see new shoots on them now, so fingers crossed, they'll grow strong.

I hope you listened to the above - DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!! Buy Bocking 14 instead - I did and it is brill stuff Even wrapped a leaf around my early seed potatoes when I planted them cos I heard this was a good idea

Just for the earlies? Is this because it rots and fertilises?

I don't have leaves yet but will mulch with it when it comes up.

Yes, only for my earlies as I will not have enough for the the next lot of potatoes My first earlies are up now.

I was wondering how to get leaves in time for planting too ... my Comfrey is just sprouting, but I don't think will be ready for "leaf harvesting" in time for Potato planting. Seems to be common advice to line-the-trench with the leaves though.

I've mulched Tomatoes with comfrey leaves but I'm not convinced that it worked as well as making Comfrey tea. I didn't have a side-by-side test though, so could have been anything / some other factor

I'm not convince by the mulching either - I'd always go for the tea. Even if you had the leaves for potato planting, it would still be early in the season for knocking the comfrey back, wouldn't it? It needs to build up some reserves in the year.

I mulch and make tea but to be honest the mulching is more to do with weed suppression and water retention that feeding but if it does a bit of that too then happy days.

Re comfrey leaves at this time of year, the OP is in Spain so am guessing they're ahead of us in the season.

My creeping comfrey (symphytum grandiflorum) is flowering, has been since last month, but as it's stoloniferous rather than deep-rooted, I suspect it doesn't have the same amount of feed benefit in the leaves. it's very pretty though, and a great ground cover plant for shady areas. I'll go take a pic in a minute.

I got about 6 'roots ' of comfrey for about�5.00 last year off eBay, it has done fine.
