What to do with lavender

Very useful... thanks all. I have a very low line (its not really a hedge) of lavender down the side of the house and have tow varieties. One variety is a real brute and spreads everywhere. the other is really nice and compact with much brighter, fuller flowers. I will now take cuttings of the smaller version to grow on and gradually replace the big variety to make a neater, more compact stepover hedge!

MH Could you underplant the tall lavender with the dwarf ones, so they conceal the bare stems?

You could, but the dwarf ones would be swamped out all through the summer by the long flower stems of the tall ones I think. And possibly the dwarf lavender would become drawn up and leggy trying to compete.

Next time your lavender is in flower remember that the flowers make an intensely flavoursome sorbet

I have a lavender hedge and usually replace it every five years.
In spite of prunings g it every year it still tends to go woody and loses its lovely fresh look.
Take cuttings, so very easy to root.

Can somebody please advise when is the best time to plant lavender seeds ?, and any opinions on white lavender I seen this in the GC recently but resisted buying the seeds

Hi Can, I have sown lavander seeds in the past in early spring.
Dont have any white ones though.
I usually take cuttings from my old bushes when they become too woody and replace them with the young plants.
I have a container of cuttings undercover in the greenhouse at present and will plant them out in the spring.

I�ve got two white lavender plants I bought for the front garden,a neighbours got purple & I didn�t want to copy but I planted it in the back garden in the end anyway Bees are more attracted to the colour purple than white,it might look nice having a few purple & a few white,does the purple lavender have more of a scent I don�t know. I sowed this lavender in December under a grow light,only one seed germinated,seeds are quite old. I�m in the middle of potting everything on I�ll do this one in a minute
