Drinker heaters

Anyone use them ? Jan/Feb I shall be away for about 3 weeks my mate who looks after "things" in my absence will not be able to do ice checks 3 times a day every day,so I am looking into ways of stopping/reducing ice formation/build-up in the drinkers.
Any input gratefully received,thanks in advance.

I'd suggest wrapping the drinkers in some 'lagging' - not easy when chooks will peck at it, I know. Raise them off the ground, and avoid rigid plastic or metal - use something softer and more flexible.

I was going to buy one - they seem to be aimed at the drinkers with a rim around the bottom.

Then I realised that I couldn't be bothered to run power to the run, due to where it is.

So opted for a big wide flexible trug - so far it's only froze when we've had a serious cold night.

Is your coop large enough for an additional drinker in there? I've put one in one of my nestbox areas before - idea being that the heat from the chooks overnight will help keep it fluid. It was a bit dusty/few bits of straw in it when I got back mind.

Cheers all Not concerned with the drinker in the run more the one in the coop "extension" currently it is suspended from the roof,but could be put on a floor pedestal with a heater underneath Getting electric to the run is not a problem for me I also like the idea & logic of putting one in a nest box

We have electricity in our run so my OH made a heater. Take one biscuit tin, fit an electric light fitting inside and use a pigmy 15w light bulb. Keeps our plastic drinker from freezing no matter how cold it gets.

After much thought I got one of these .... POULTRY DRINKER HEATER anti freeze pets | eBay ... only 5 watt consumption but more importantly for my super dim chooks,only 12 volts,so if they do peck the flex I won't come home to fried chicken

Cheers for that frias,it took a little time but I did get around to making a low voltage version,using two chocolate tins,a low vo lighting transformer & three 5watt light bulbs ...
