Hi i have just bought 4 hens about 4 weeks from laying. One of the hens a gray speckeld as soon as i put hay in the nest boxes she scrats it all out again!!!!!!!!!! help

Some don't like certain nesting materials. Try straw or shavings and see which they prefer. Hay contains a lot of seeds so I think it does encourage chooks to scratch around in it rather more than say a bed of shavings.

hay also encourages red mite. and straw for that matter but we put diatom powder on it so no problem. Funny things hens- pop a couple of fake eggs in the nest box in a couple of weeks time to give her the idea too.

Mine are fine with shredded paper or chopped straw they pull full length straw out & dig out shavings

yes, I just use bed down dust extracted - chopped straw - sold for horses normally- it rots down super quick too

As I get my straw "at the right price" from a farmer I known for years,I just chop it into approx 75mm lengths using a meat cleaver on my log splitting block
