Best spuds to grow

Hi, I am just after a couple of suggestions...

I have never grown potato's before, and was wondering if anyone can suggest the best first early to grow, and the best maincrop. I do have an allotment (half plot), and just wanted opinions as to the best tasting and easiest to grow. I am toying with not bothering with maincrop as it will take up a fair amount of room, and to be honest will they be any different to shop bought?

Brilliant thanks. I noticed Wilkinsons had bags of seed potato's the other day that were pretty cheap. Has anyone had any experience with their seeds as I thought they looked pretty good.

Can I add that for jacket potatoes, Lady Balfour are fantastic - crispy skin, creamy inside...yum!

I grew Charlotte (FE), Rocket (FE), Rooster (not sure, main crop?), Maris Piper (MC) - the charlottes were by far the nicest - so creamy in flavour. They still taste good now from storage.

I then grew Charlotte and Kestrels (both first earlies again (at least I think kestrel is)) - again, hands down the charlotte was amazing. Kestrels looked nice with purple eyes, etc - but comments were passed on the charlottes on xmas day.

This year, I'm going for Charlotte again (alot this time!) and probably rooster again. Maris piper were cheaper from the shops, for the small (big large individual spuds) yeild I got.

as above all subject to taste but have to agree Charlotte was a hands down defo on the list for this year
trying Lady Chrystal (FE) and Rocket (FE) already got these chitting in the back bedroom
then Charlotte (SE) loads of these then Sarpo Mira(MC) and Rooster(MC) had great results with these last year and storing very well ( still have half a 12.5kg bag left in bottom shed) and are all perfect really looking forward to this years growing season as first full year lottie owner (last year was March onwards)
