Mouldy Garlic :(

Hi,

I planted garlic in february for the first time. Some of it had started to turn yellow and die back so I dug these ones up today - but they are covered in green, white and black mould. What could this be? I've attached some photos. Some of the bulbs still had green leaves - I dug down to these and they aren't mouldy but aren't big enough to pull yet either so I left them there.

I'm just wondering how deep you planted them? Mine are *just under* the surface & coming along nicely.

Anyhoo, it looks like a really bad case of white rot. Have a look and see if your onions are affected too.

Yeah, that does sound like it. We had some overwintering onions nearby which did something similar I've put all my onions for this year in a different part of the same bed - are they likely to suffer a similar fate? Would transplanting them to somewhere else (might have to be pots as I've run out of room!) do any good? The shoots are about 3-4 inches high now.

I wouldn't suggest it from what I've read:

White rot or mouldy nose is a serious disease and is always worst in hot, dry summers.
Foliage turns yellow and wilts. A fluffy white mould appears on the base of the bulbs and round black bodies appear in this fungus.
Lift and burn affected plants.
There is no chemical treatment you can use. Do not grow alliums on infected land for at least 8 years.
