Loo Rolls

I'm sure I've read somewhere that you should microwave your loo rolls before using as seed pods,for what reason would you do it or as usual have I got the wrong end of the stick???

I always zap mine in the microwave but only for a minute or they might catch fire. I find that, if I don't, I get some sort of mushroomy things growing along with the seedlings. Apparently, they don't cause a problem but they look a bit unsightly.

Personally I've never bothered .. and not had a problem . You get a sort of white mould on the outsides (can't see inside obviously) but it doesn't seem to affect anything.

Nuking them would be a good step towards sterilising them. When you think about the kind of unwashed hands that come into contact with the rolls it's no real wonder that there's stuff on there that'd grow when in a warm and moist environment.

I don't have a microwave and use loo roll insides for my beans; if you sow crops that will only be in there a couple of weeks at most; then they are in the ground before any problems arise.

The only hands that come into contact with the middle of loo rolls are mine cos nobody else knows how to change them .

Personally I couldn't care less - I'd just plonk a load of compost into the tube and use it - I know some people are more sanitarily inclined though.

I don't even wash my hands before tucking into my butties down on the plot. I might if I had been handling something particularly grim but otherwise I give them a quick rinse at most if there are whole sods of turf hanging off them.

My DS school won't let you send loo rolls in for junk modelling cos of the germs!!!!!!
Have no idea about the loo roll mould but will keep my eyes out for it as i didn't nuke them.

I think it bothers me more to put loo rolls in the microwave that I use for food than it does to see a bit of mould on the outside of the tubes.

I am always in deep sh*t whenever my OH asks me "do you want to keep these jars. icecream boxes, whatever". If I start collecting loo rolls as well I think he will try to get be sectioned.

I've got the whole family saving me loo rolls.

My maiden aunt, an avid gardener, got a sack of sewage sludge from the local sewage farm. It's supposed to be treated and good for the garden. Anyway she put it in the water butt where she usually put horse manure and when it rained and the butt filled up with water there were dozens of condoms floating on top! Obviously they don't rot down. She never used the sludge!

My family produce plenty of loo rolls however........
from work I have, coffee grounds, shredded paper, pallets, the cardboard type cups, kitchen roll tubes .

Anyone got any good typs for the filling of said loo rollls,I seem to get more in the tray than the roll.Thought about cutting off a milk bottle (plastic) for a sort of funnel. All suggestions gratefully received
