Seed Storage Ideas

Hi All,

How do you all store your seeds and what do you store them in? Personally I store/chuck all mine in a plastic box and as a result frustrates me when trying to find the seeds I know are in there.

I�ve seen some ideas online but want to know how you store yours.

In a large plastic box.
One elastic band round spares/duplicates.
Rest in different elastic bands according to month of first sowing, with bit of paper tucked in to band to say which pile is sown in which month. Busy months like april split into early and late halves so the elastic bands will stretch round them.

Video cassette boxes for seeds like carrots
Plastic tubs from Morrisons Salad bar (the ones they use to fill the Make your own salad bins). They give them away if you ask. I have one for almost every letter of the alphabet - don't ask)
Bigger plastic boxes for beans and peas.
Flower seeds, sorted alphabetically, in ziptop bags.

My mess

I am ashamed to say that this is my messy seed box. Every Spring it starts off neat and tidy. By this time every year it ends up in a similar state to this.

You�ll have to both forgive me (VC & Small Pumpkin) it was 7 seven years ago - I struggle to remember what I did yesterday

What it does show though is that I haven�t improved on my organisational skills in those years

Mine are in a metal box, not in order just all in a big pile in there. I really need to sort it out and get it in order.

My seeds are in small brown envelopes.
They are labelled and stored in alphabetical order in a shoe box .

I've got a big box for my veggie seeds, all grouped together by type, so beetroot all together, etc. I hold each bunch together with bulldog clips. I'm planning on getting some more, as I ran out of clips before I ran out of seed bunches lol

I'm doing a beginner's horticulture course at Edinburgh Botanic Gardens right now, and at last night's class the tutor recommended we keep seeds in an airtight container in the fridge, to keep them viable for as long as possible.

I realise that those folk with mountains of seeds might find this a bit of a struggle ....but perhaps anything special might be worth storing very cold.

I don’t have space in my fridge, but the garage is on the north side of our house, so always cooler than any other room.
That is, when they’re not all strewn around the kitchen worktops when I cannot find the packets I’m looking for

She said a cold garage would be fine. I think airtight was almost the most important, so they are kept dry and don't go mouldy. Not sure the kitchen would be the best long term location

I have mine in shoe boxes,shoved anywhere I find a space. A shoebox for flowers and one for veg, all grouped in alphabetical order. A separate box for seeds that are expiring/expired and to be sown first. Peas and Beans have a big paper bag of their own. Seeds which have been sown are kept together with an elastic band. Seeds collected from seed in envelopes.
