confused about raspberries

Hi all

having read the other post on here about mulching my raspberries- does this apply to newly planted canes??? I have just put in about 6 canes in my new allotment (and have some more on the way, i'm a bit of a fan of raspberries . They've been put in a trench with rotted pony poo and some mixed ericaceous/MP compost around the root balls but so far I haven't put anything else on top of the soil. should I? will bark chips be fine (I have plenty of these)

You don't have to, I mulch my established canes with compost- your already prepared them well for root growth.

But it's bare soil around them, no weeds as my Chickns weed around them for me
