i think i may have made a mistake, about a week or so ago i potted my fig tree (well seedling/sapling really) up from a 6 inch pot to a 10 inch pot and its only 10 inches tall to the grow tip (12 inches to the highest point if you prefer ) i used to get about 1 leaf a week but now im getting nothing.. apart from a thing which looks like a side shoot but it'll probably go brown and crispy like the other ones have, is it worth potting it down to the 6 inch pot or should i just leave it?

Well it is moving into autumn so I would expect growth to slow down anyway. My fig tree is not making any new leaves and will lose them all over winter. I wouldn't be worried, although I would have potted it up in the spring rather than now.

only reason i potted it up was because i saw a couple of roots poking out the holes of the pot and i didnt know that they liked having their roots restricted

am i right in thinking i'll need to wait 2 years or so before i get a single fig?

You have quite a long time to wait for figs. They grow into big trees. And yes, they do like their roots restricted. If I were you I would put it back into it's original pot for the winter if you can do that without causing any damage. Time for re-potting is Spring when growth starts again. And you need more than a few roots poking out the bottom of the pot before you re-pot. Try tipping the plant (gently) out of the pot and actually looking at the rootball.

You have quite a long time to wait for figs.

hope theyre worth the wait.. i got some figs from asda recently and they tasted of nothing

Home grown figs are delicious as you can pick them when they are really ripe. Really ripe figs will not travel, so the shop ones are unripe.

You are looking to see if the compost is FULL of roots (i.e. overcrowded)

My fig is around 2 foot tall. It's around 2 years old. I moved it early this spring and we have eating 2 figs and there are around 10 more figs on there.

You won't expect your fig to grow in the autumn.

Can anyone tell me how old a tree needs to be before it puts fruit out?

The person above you had had fruit from a 2yo tree.. I'd have though from around 2years - 4 years depending on the fruit?

My fig is about 4 years old, & this year we have had about a dozen beautiful figs.I lost the first 2 as I left them on the plant too long & they were full of ants !! Pick them as soon as they start to feel soft & have just started to colour.Unfortunately there are about another 20 on the plant which will get to a reasonable size, but I doubt they will ripen. Is there anything one can do with these as it would be a shame to just waste them?
What should I do about pruning? All my books seem to tell me something different!

Figs don't need a lot of pruning. Once you have the main structure of about 4-5 main stems all that is need is to prune back the laterals to about 1".

Remove all the figs that haven't ripened in November, these won't amount to edible fruit anyway and will drain energy in the spring when you want the new embryo fruits to develop. In the UK you will only get one lot of fruit per year when normally figs want to make 2-3 a year, but we don't have a warm enough climate for this.

Mine did the same, I overwinter mine in the greenhouse and brought it out too early. I did have young figs developing but a late frost killed them and some new leaves got crisped.

Have found a recipe for green fig compote. Will try it & see what happens!
