Long Cane Raspberries - Octavia

Hi all,

I adore raspberries but unfortunately they are ridiculously expensive, none of the family will touch them and they seem to go off quickly, so it sometimes seems too much of a luxury.

I don't have the room in my garden for a row of raspberry canes but Dobies are advertising long cane traspberries which they say can be grown in large pots. Everything I have ever read about raspberries says that they can't be grown in a pot because of their root growth.

Just wondered if anyone has ever tried this and, if so, how you got on?

You really need them in the ground Jools but if you can't spare space for a row why not scrounge a couple of plants & plant them up againt a post & grow them like that. Plant one either side of the post & make some circles out of think wire & train them through these for support. You won't get masses of fruit but enough for a treat for yourself

Hi Jools,

Long cane means that it's carrying some fruiting canes for next year ( saves you waiting the extra year for fruit).

I think that they are Glen Magna that Dobies sell as long canes & thats not a bad one it's a summer fruiting one I think so maybe you could have two posts & grow Glen magna up one & something like Autumn Bliss or Joan J up the other one ( they 're Autumn fruiting) .

Hi Jools, I've grown some Autumn raspberries in a large tub this year & they were fine, it was the 3 free ones from GYO magazine. I think autumn ones are probably more suited to growing in pots & troughs as you cut them down every year & don't have to establish a framework of canes. I didn't get a massive crop, just enough for a few bowls & the odd sprinkling on my cereals in the mornings but if there's only you who likes them it might be O.K. for you.

Straining wire

What you need is a:-
Bit of scrap wood that is solid ( a new off cut is ideal)
Netting staples
Hammer
Wire cutters

1. Make sure the far end of the wire is firmly fixed � if it comes loose it could be dangerous. (I�d twist it back on its self& put an extra staple in to make sure)
2. Run your wire out and cut it about 12�-18� longer than you need.
3. With your piece of wood along side the post wrap the wire around the end making sure it won�t slip
4. then using the wood as a lever strain the wire & hammer the staple home
5. Cut the excess off leaving enough to twist in on itself as per the other end.
6. if you are going across more than one post do the two ends & then secure it to the middle posts afterwards.
7. Put the kettle on �. You deserve a brew

Little voice in the wilderness....is there anyone out there who I can cadge a cane of Glen magna, Autumn Bliss or Joan J from?? I live near j13 of the M25 and have transport! Perhaps you all beat me hands down in the gardening front so I can't offer much there but I can offer a seriously gorgeous chocolate cake as an exchange. Ask my husband...putty in my hands if I make one!
