which apple tree??

Hi everyone i am getting ready to plant some new fruit trees and wanted opinions on whats the best eating apple to plant.

I have a large area so size isn't a problem.

Ah, thats a dangerous question AT as what one person like others may not For what it's worth my favourite apples are

Russets - Either St Edmunds or Ribston pippin if you can find them. They have a lovely nutty sweet taste
Worcester Pearmain - an earlyish one but my dad had one of these on his plot & I can stilltaste them now picked straight from the tree (sits drooling)
Katy - Sometimes called Katja. Comes from Sweden so should be hardy in Garstang & probably better than Worcester but I'm biased in favour of WP

I got my first apples this year - 'Scrumptious' was the variety, and they were!

Definetely agree with Nick about Worcester Pearmain; I come from near Worcester, and my grandad had them in his back garden. Absolutely delicious - I'll have to get one for up here too.

my favourite apple

Planted a new apple tree this year Fiesta. This variety is supposed to be pretty good for up here in Scotland.

It was in a pot before being planted and so produced a few delicious apples. As Nick says though flavour is a very personal thing. Try to find somewhere offering you a taste of different varieties so you can choose one that suits you, there are a lot of apple days on around the place at the moment.

AT, just thought. A bit of a trip down the M6 for you, but over this weekend, there is an Apple Day at Reaseheath College near Nantwich in Cheshire (www.reaseheath.ac.uk) where you can taste apples, get them identified etc. I think you're quite close to Myerscough College - they might well have a similar event as I think they do lots of horticultural courses there.

OOh thanks HM will look into,yes i am just across the field from myerscough but not sure whats on at mo,knowing my luck i will be in the garden when i hear the tannoy announcing apple day!!!

I'm off to an apple day at the Whitehall garden centre in Lacock, Wiltshire today. I'll let you know what it was like - I'm not really sure what to expect, but I don't want to buy any apples as there are plenty in the garden!

The only pit fall I had going to a garden centre that didn't produce the trees they were selling was I got one that was miss-labeled.It's only a minor problem,but it could have been my main pollinator and if it flowers at the wrong time you could be in trouble.
