      • Hello all, this site is brilliant!!!
I do have a few questions though, if I may
I have got some 40 ltr bag things to put my potatoes in and I know that I have to keep adding the compost as the shoots/flowers show. I was advised to use tomatoe fertiliser for them every couple of weeks, is that correct?
Also, I have bought the rooster potoes and I have read every bit of this link which I appreciate and have now taken the potatoes out of the bag and leaving to chit on windowsill. But, I love Maris piper potatoes, when should I be putting them in? Could someone kindly advise of nice earlies and nice mid earlies and nice a bit later mid ones. I'm a bit lost now
I like King Edwards too and I am not sure how to get new potaoes, its a mine field.
Also, where is Mr Tatties site to buy potatoe seed type potatoes?

Many thanks if anyone can advise, sorry if I have bombarded you all with questions

Coincidentially I chased mine up on Thursday to be told that they had been sent out on Wednesday but no sign of them yet. Bloomin' postal service, wanted to get the earlies chitting in January but will have to be start of Feb now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

            • Pink Fir Apple

Ok, I've got my seed potatoes which include Pink Fir Apple and they're all by the window in the garage.

I know it's a few weeks off but I'm beginning to wonder how you plant Pink Fir Apple tubers. Do you lay them flat, or do they go in upright? Or does it make no difference whatsoever?!

I think I may be over-complicating it but any ideas are welcome!

                • I've noticed one of my seed potatoes is slightly green.. given the "don't eat a green potato" thing I've had drilled into me from my wife is this ok?

                  • Oh, and can someone clarify this again for me please

Why don't main crops need chitting, whilst earlies do? Reading around even more, every article contradicts the last?!

                    • Chris don't worry about green potatoes for planting as that is what you want.
Earlies can be advanced in the length of time it takes for them to grow by chitting but maincrops mature by the length of the days.

                      • Filled some of my used fertiliser bags today with a mixture of soil and sand.............. and snow!
I'll take them to the lottie, add a bit of peat and BFB, give them a shake around and plant tatties and leave in greenhouse (once the snow has melted)
Oooops, nearly forgot, I'll need to punch a few holes in the bottom for drainage.
I have two varieties, Winston 1st early and Kestrel 2nd early. About 30 seed tatties in each 2.4Kg bag so I need 60 fertiliser bags filled. My car will only carry 6 at a time so thats 5 trips to the lottie!

                          • A forced experiment for this year....

Last year I only grew four varieties, and it isn't hard to tell maris Piper from PFA from Desiree from King Eds, both before planting and after harvest.... this year I'm growing about 15 varieties so to avoid the problem of wondering which seed is which, all the low-count stuff I've already got I've just written the variety on them with a marker pen......
