In the UK, under the Allotments Act 1925, land that is designated "statutory allotment" cannot be sold or repurposed without ministerial consent.
Since Labour came to power last year, Angela Rayner, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, has approved the sale of 8 allotment sites in Somerset, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire, Nottinghamshire, West Sussex, Derbyshire and Kent to raise money for cash strapped councils. It seems likely that as financial pressures on councils grow, she will approve more sales, and when they are gone they are never replaced.
There is a petition available to sign, calling on the government to protect allotments, not sell them for housing. You can sign the petition here Angela Rayner: Hands off our allotments | We Own It.
