Just wondering what size garden or how many acres everyone has?
we've only got just under an acre at the moment but I'm hoping for at least 2 acres when we move so I can have all the things I want.

hen house + paddock

and a patch for pumpkins lol.

just the garden, 100ft long, 40ft wide, bottom 40x40 used for the fruit and veg (how much is that in acres?)
would love a few acres, but tooooooo much for a single dad to cope with on his own!

Garden approximately 130 x 35 foot. Gradually getting the furthest away 40 foot or so under control and 'vegged up'. Also a greenhouse closer to the house and peas and asparagus where most peeps have flower borders!

Garden approx 30ft x 20ft - vegetables in three raised beds each approx 3ft x 3ft plus three potato bags and herbs in containers. Fruit trees/canes within 'flower' beds.

Would love an allotment (and I think there are a couple available nearby) but keep putting it off because there is still loads to do in the house.

Long term aim is to acquire a few acres of grazing for an alpaca herd.

We have about 3/4 of an acre and believe me, for those who wish they had that much, it is a FULLTIME job, for 2 people to garden properly that amount of land. Unless you, as the first poster says, put most of it down to grass for grazing, then you are in for a shock when and if you begin. I know we were somewhat unprepared for the volume of work required. Another point is the cost of furnishing a big area with plants. Buying 1 or 2 perennials is ok in a small area, but in say a 60 foot by 12 foot border you need to plant in 7's or 9's to get any impact. Ok, so you can buy one and propagate, we do, but it does delay the planting for a long time.
We have some friends who have just given up a 5 acre plot, purely and simply becaue they could no longer see any pleasure in working all week and rushing home, praying for decent weather just to spend all weekend driving a lawnmower around, cutting the grass.
Think carefully about what you want, you may just get it.

I just have a back garden - large in some peoples eyes, small in others! Trapezoid in shape approx 40-50 foot wide and similar in length. Only a small fraction is taken up by our veggies! We would love about an acre so we can have a few pigs and chooks and veggies and lounging space too!

Totally agree, we have 1/2 acre, mostly lawn and stable yard, but room for four 4' x 8' raised beds which I plant following 'square foot gardening' method, and there's plenty of room for lots of produce. But, mowing, weeding the rest of it is a heck of a job - the worst thing are the hedges and trees.... and then shredding or getting rid of all the stuff that produces. Didn't stop me getting an allotment though (mainly to keep the numbers of lotties in the village in use above critical!)

In the past I've always wanted to buy a few acres, but over the years I've realised that with a full time job and family, it could easily end up as a weed patch, so happy with what I have now.

Garden 100ft long and probably about 25 wide. Bottom third fruit & veg, middle third wildflower meadow, nearest third patio and flowers/shrubs. I'd like about twice the GYO space but no more. I'd hate it to become a burden in me old age!

You want a lot Salina. I have about an acre and I find that plenty space for all the things you say you want - minus the paddocks. But horses do need a lot of space. I don't want anymore than I have. It's plenty to get on with, and sometimes I think I could do with less.

As most of you know I have a 5 acre plot to grow my veg on. My advice is to heed what Palustris says. I work 7 days a week there, minimum 8 hours a day up to 16 or 17 hours depending on whats happening. I have about 4 acres planted with the remaining acre to go under cultivation for overwintering onions, garlic etc.
Despite the long hours I love what I do it but you will never ever ever ever hear me say that I am winning the war on weeds. Also, Maggie nips my head about the hours I do
