Well the lifestyle gurus say it takes 21 days to develop a new good habit so I reckon a month is enough to see if they are right - as long as the goal is realistic and the reward is intrinsic!
This philsophy has never worked with me and diets jeanied, I'm not sure I have the capacity to remember not to do something for 21 days. I remember when I first had a girl friend many moons ago, and while trying to make a good impression I refrained from trumping in front of her. It gave me right bad stomach cramps so it did, so I had to refrain from abstaining. Now I'm married I don't worry about such little details I simply blame it on the dog.
I also suffer from Chris's problem but fall into the conscious incompetence for this one. I think the best one for me will have to be to try and go to bed before I fall asleep on the very large and extremely soft and lovely sofa every night. I promise to try, but its very difficult to notice you've fallen asleep it has a habit of creeping up on you.
Well I have moved from unconscious incompetence with my handbrake, to conscious incompetence - so every time I forget and rasp it on, I press the button and do it again properly. You never know!

I dont want to lower your resolve but I have been "rasping" my handbrakes since 1965 and never lost a handbrake or car yet.
Oh I did used to do it "silently" for a while when I had been out with my mates and had a little to much to drink, i didnt want to wake my wife so I was extra quiet, on tip toes, shoes off, this was just before I tripped over the cat (Named by me "cooking fat" and all hell broke loose.
I'm trying my best at work not to complain, mutter, or niggle about ANYTHING. Everyone at work does it all the time, for all sorts of reasons, 90% of them trivial "what shall we talk about, let's have a moan" things. But I'm adopting a double philosophy of "what can't be cured shall be endured (with a smile)",
and "I don't HAVE to get annoyed".
Early days, and basically what I'm doing is thinking before I open my mouth, but I'm definitely more content at the end of the day.
How is everyone getting on with their good intentions / good habits?
I reckon I remember mine about half the time- so I am a lot quieter when I park these days! I am mulling over next month's - as it is a short month I reckon I should give myself a real challenge.
Thank you so much for starting this idea Jeanie, it's been really good for me.
I've only slipped up once at work and started to moan, and felt bad about it the rest of the day. It's definitely getting easier to keep my mouth shut and say nothing, if, as DDNHSW says above, I have nothing nice to say.
I'm happier, my team is happier, and as I don't stay around or lend an ear when other people start to complain, I find that they complain less around me too (although no doubt they go off in search of more sympathetic ears!)
I'm not starting another resolution yet, I want to get this down to the point where I don't even have to think about it, which is still quite a way off yet
Well, I 'usually' remember not to use the handbrake ratchet, but I caught myself out on that one, only this morning.
I am drinking more water, and having more visits to the loo, as a result, but hey-ho!
My Dogs are getting more walks, and longer ones, too. Usually with a friend and her Dog, so we're all getting fitter, and the Dogs are happier.
I have finally got on top of my Husbands paperwork, and am in the process of 'training' him to keep better records. Accountants have been engaged, and everything is in order. So far.
Unfortunately, I can't be too smug. Despite being better organised with the laundry, I'm still incredibly lazy around the house, and will find any excuse to not do any housework.
