  • Malicious Software

Have just been sent this at work:

"Just a word of warning and some basic advice for anybody who owns a home PC.

Most people are now quite savvy when it comes to PC Security - using up to date Anti Virus, not opening emails when the sender claims to be from a bank you don't have an account with, you have an uncollected (unsolicited) parcel awaiting at Fed Ex etc...

Your Bank, PayPal etc. would never send you an e mail asking for your account details, login information etc.

The current biggest risk for home and business users is something known as Ransomware. (Def: Ransomware - a type of malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid).

There are many types, variants of ransomware which include "Fake Anti Virus" telling the user they have X amount of infection, Internet usage, dodgy website warnings and the latest: Cryptolocker.

CryptoLocker – is particularly bad because it actually does what most ransomware merely claims to do: it encrypts the contents of your computer using strong cryptography, it is the sort of threat that can seriously ruin your week, month, or year depending on how important the data on your computer is (and backup frequency).

Please make sure that you use a good reputable Anti Virus, never open email that you are uncertain of, always scan e mail attachments BEFORE opening, and most importantly: back up your data on a regular basis - personal pictures are memories and mean a lot to the person who has stored them, do you really want to risk losing them."

While we should take all of these scams seriously and be doubly careful about the 'phishing' expeditions these fraudsters use, I rather liked this 'scam':
