Arrange for a friend to phone you 20 mins into the date. If your date is awful, pretend it's an emergency, and off you go home

Yup, I'd be happy to give you a quick bell 'just by chance' if you went to meet someone. I'd also recommend picking a time limiting excuse though - as in you'll have to be home for the school run/babysitter/docs appt by such and such a time. Even if things go well, it's more comfortable all round to have a cut off point, rather than either of you feeling awkward or embarrassed about being the first to say you'll have to be off.
