It is only to hold the joists for second floor!

Maybe I'm being obtuse here, but...they need to remove the old one presumably, to replace it with the new one. There must be an old one, or the second floor would have fallen down, yes ? (You can see where I'm going here, can't you.)
So having removed the old one, while they are putting the new one in, what is holding the bl***y house up ??

When we had a bay window taken off the back of the house (to accommodate the conservatory ) they had to take a big oak lintel out which was three pieces of timber strapped together.. I went upstairs to the bedroom and could see daylight above the skirting board, reckon there was about three header bricks holding it up . Old house not cavity wall.... Never seen builders work so fast

The beam is 300x300 and nearly 5metres long! He already has two oversized RSJ's going in for a single storey cavity wall. Real over kill I think. Ive been in the building game for 15 years and only ever seen a beam like that used on a huge bridge! It is a lovely bit of wood though. The price was about �500 which I dont think is that bad.
