To clear snow or not to clear, that is the question?
I'm exactly the same SR. Buy some spikes, it definitely gives you your confidence back. Just search eBay for 'ice grips', and make sure you get some with actual spikes on the bottom - the 'coils' type aren't much use for hard ice.
