Can MODS read private messages ?

I asked the same question myself a while ago Liza. The next question would be what have you been writing in a pm that you don't want them to see? But I wouldn't dream of asking you that question 'cos you are beyond reproach. Usually!

Just reassuring a newbie that they shouldn't take any notice of a jealous grape doubting them and wanting proof by pictures, I don't mind sharing we are all friends aren't we ?

What's that got to do with us reading PMs?

We had one Grape a while back that was PMing people telling them that I [personnally] could read them, was reading them and was telling other people what they said.....which did kind of get my back up as I can't, I wouldn't and if I could and had - surely the people in question would know if their private stuff got out???

Anyhow - I just thought they might have been up to their old tricks.

The only time we have been able to read PMs was the night when we were all logged in as Olivier; not just the mods - everyone that night was logged in as him. And we could ALL see his PMs. So we [well, Sarz] deleted them as soon as we realised as we didn't want everyone to be able to read private stuff.

There is actually a system for reporting Private Messages, the same as reporting posts, to be used in case of spam, harrassment, abuse etc., etc. In the case of a reported PM, then Admin/Mods are able to read the reported PM (but no others) in order to decide how to deal with it.
If there was legal reasons, then Admin would be able to go into the database and find the text of PMs, but there isn't much precedent for that, and as far as I'm aware it's never happened on this site.

Is this something that the Mods should be aware of? Feel free to PM and tell one of us if something needs sorting out.
