Are you doing it for sponsors or for fun(!).
It's run by the British Heart Foundation so you have to raise money for them - but I don't have a problem with that.

Partly why I've mentioned it on here is so that I can't back out.

I thought I had found my lost youth last year so got a bike & all the gear. I lost it again 20 minutes later.......................gave everything away due to sore bum.

I salute your bravery! A couple of years ago Mr Teez ans I cycled the Camel Trail ( only Wadebridge to Padstow!) and on a borrowed bike with a saddle like a razor blade I was in such agony by the time we got back , I couldn't speak and had severe doubts as to whether I'd ever walk normally again! As it is, I recovered the use of my buttocks, but I'll never play the cello again.....

Cycle shorts with padding and a good saddle help BM.

I think there will be some form of online sponsorship via the BHF when the time comes - thanks for the offers already though! Encouraging.

Given that we've no shower/wash facilities at work...

When I worked in the building next to this one some years ago I used to drive to work on a Monday and take my clothes for the week. Then cycle the rest of the week and drive on Friday to bring it all back - but they had shower facilities...
Now I'm certain you've heard of Baby Wipes! When we were between Caravans and had gone back to a Tent, we used Baby Wipes instead of washing facilities, as the queues were horrendous. They are fantastic!

Sorry, forgot to add - well done for agreeing to do it, I hope you enjoy it!

                  My tips:

                  - training: I only did 20 milers as training, but I did them slow/fast/slow (interval training). Adding weight to the bike is a good idea too

You'll find loads of "how to ride the London-Brighton" on tinterwebby. Here's one: Before40 - London To Brighton Bike Ride

                  Are you booking a hotel?
Great training link - cheers TS. I used to got out cross country (trail) riding quite a bit, but that was easy in our old house (see attached photo of view of our old back garden/view). Used to cover 20-25 miles in 2 hours - measured via cycle computer doobry, once or twice a week. Different now with Bean, but still should manage.

Have recently bought one of these: http://www.instep.net/Product/Discon...iler_12-QE100/
so adding weight shouldn't be a problem. Bean weighs about 27lbs, plus change bag.

Do you mean before or after the event?

My brother lives in Brighton, so I may be able to crash (no pun intended) at his, but to be honest - we're driving down to Devon the following day so I'll probably head home the same day. Shame the trains don't allow bikes on the day (but I can understand why) because I can almost go door to door by train.

If you mean the night before I'm pretty sure we've a friend who lives near Clapham who'll be glad to give me a bed for the night.

                  Edit: photo now added.

Don't wear cotton: it gets wet & doesn't dry out again. Aldi/Lidl often do cheap breathable cycle tops (they're good). I'm sure you already know this

Most of your sweat will evaporate during the ride, the problem is when you stop: then you really sweat! Backpacks are sweat-traps too, use panniers instead.

So slow right down for the last mile or so, or even get off and walk while you cool down.

Then use baby wipes to freshen up.

I didn't know that - I've only been into our local Aldi a few times and the Lidl less. Do they go to XL?

I'll hopefully use my brothers shower to freshen up.

You're always a bit sore when you start cycling: but after a while your saddle breaks you in

btw, gel saddles are rubbish, you need a leather one, which moulds to your shape
