a little situation has developed in the house where i'm currently a live in nanny. young miss aged 4 got hold of her mothers tipp-ex and decorated her face somehow. thankfully this was not on my watch so i am grinning all the way to the bank and back, while listening to how this is not a good weekend blah blah blah!.

i have had to forceably hold mother back from using stain devils and that gunk to remove sticky labels from things ......anything that breaks glues down isnt suitable for a childs face!

i've tried lemon juice and have googled and found toothpaste might work, but was wondering if any of you wise people have had any experience with this dilema &/or might have some safe suggestions to try!.

the father suggested A&E- seriously!

nail polish remover? Used carefully on cotton buds maybe. Most are now acetone free so should not be too harsh, well, no harsher than tippex anyway.

Ahem Now not I'm saying this is a true story but a friend of mine and I went out and partook in some sipping of alcoholic drinks many moons ago. Finding our selves short of a mobile phone or two we had the 'good sense' to head back to the office to use the phone. Long story short. We both woke up (in seperate villages) with our faces covered in t**pex.

So the story goes, I covered mine in vasaline and left it to soak for ages and then used an exfoliating cloth with soap and water to wipe it off.

Said friend used nail varish remover recommended by his then girlfriend - me thinks she was a bit cross

I Think typex is solvent based so if washing up liquid may break it down, the only other option I could think of would be normal make up removal products, nail polish remover would take solvent off but could cause irritation especally around the eyes

Umm, any bits that don't either wash or peel off easily, I'd just leave tbh. It's not as if it's a tattoo - it will go in time! Better a gentle approach/waiting game than potentially nasty solvents.

Alcohol wipes from a medical kit will do the trick. However special care on the face as you do not want that to get into the eyes

i'd love to tell them to lighten up!!. however its fathers 50th birthday party tomorrow and she is going to need to be brought in for show and tell at some point(dont get me started.....i finish the job in a month!), so they'd prefer she was tipex free!!.

i'll try the vaseline, and see if there are some medical wipes....or pick some up when i'm out this morning, plus the toothpaste. hopefully her mother hasnt done something drastic (& stupid) in the meantime......i havent heard screaming, so fingers crossed!.

Oh Lordy!! This reminds me of a situation that occurred while I was living in a big house that had been converted to flats. Liz (my age - going on elderly) had been presented with a two year old granddaughter who had decided to decorate her entire body with permanent marker - how she got hold of it is none of my business but I have to say my kids were not allowed access to anything except water soluble pens). Anyway, Liz brought granddaughter to my flat for advice. We sat child on draining board and smothered her with Vaseline, left for a few minutes and removed with cotton wool. This dissolved the marker (more or less), and was repeated until child was more or less stain-free. Liz and I had to hold back the laughter as we were trying to tell the child that she shouldn't have done it and should never do it again. We both ended up giggling once Liz realised that the marks were coming off. Having related that incident I must say that babywipes get most things off - in fact they are so effective at removing stuff (eg mould on a pram cover that had been stored in my shed) that I wonder if they should be used on babies.

In the interests of science (and because I've nothing better to do), I decided to do a little experiment:

1. Used Tipp-Ex to paint stripes long stripes across the palm of my hand

2. Allowed to dry for ten minutes.

3. Looked for Vaseline, baby wipes, and anything else I thought might take the bl**sted stuff off (NOTE: this should have been done as step one )

4. Apply copious amounts of chosen product

Results:

Baby Wipes - I used those with the 'extra protection' stripes. Result: useless.

Hand Sanitizer -(OK OK not ideal but I am at work and had to use with what I had) Removed some of the Tipp-Ex (thinner layers) but not advised for use on face.

Vaseline - Gentle to apply and remove. Excellent results. Any residue after first application was easily removed after second application.

you have reported this too early, you have to be able to repeat the experiment before you publish your paper, you will need another test subject, my suggestion would be

1 find a sleeping relative (nursery staff may use sleeping children)

2 draw on a typex moustaches and/or beards (remember if you want to deny doing this make sure you leave atleast one person in the room alone, they will then take the blame, especally if you plant the typex in their pocket)

3 retreat to a safe distance leaving the test subjects with each removal technique

4 video if necessary (be careful to come up with an excuse why your filming)
then use film to write up conclusions

Haven't laughed so much since Granny got her t*t caught in the mangle !
I tend to agree with Fiona that the parents should 'lighten up' but if the little girl is being prepared for a public appearance at her Father's birthday party, then perhaps, if the vaseline doesn't work, you should colour over the Tippex with a pink felt pen. Job done !
How I admire anyone who is a Nanny or childminder of any kind. I find that being a parent of a 6 and a 2 year old is tough enough, couldn't be doing with looking after children that
weren't my own !

I nannied for a while when I left college. It is NOT an easy job. One couple I worked for only saw their kids for two hours (a week), on a Sunday when they picked them up from Grandma's. This was out of choice not circumstance.
