Cann anyone help me get rid of tomcat pee?

The plasterers kept leaving the front door wide open on Friday and a cat got in and sprayed somewhere in the hall. I can't find any stains but the smell is VILE.

I have washed carpet and walls with a very mild bleach solution (having new carpet when finished the extension), and have sprayed the whole thing at least 4 times now with febreeze.
Still smells bad.

HELP!

Have thought about getting the plasterers to wash the carpet next!

Oh dear Janeyo, I remember in my cool days....., taking girlfriends cat to the vet on the bus & it pee'd in the bag I was carrying on me. I had to throw my treasured crombie away. It stank..........

Don't use ANYTHING containing bleach or ammonia. It will attract any spraying cats back to the same area. I've heard lemon juice is good, or good old fashioned washing up liquid in copious amounts. Tis a bummer, innit? A cat I shared a house with peed on my laptop bag (he was stressed at his owners yelling at each other all the time). It still faintly smells, now and it was 3 years ago!!

You can get a special cleaner at the pet store - (the one that is chez nous)- not sure how effective it is as I've never tried it!

I think your best chance of success is to actually track down exactly where the smell is coming from. Get down and have a good sniff around. YUK !
Are you sure the smell is actually in the hall. When I had a similar problem I discovered that the pee was actually on the outside of the door , the doorstep and the windowcill.
If you find it is actually on the carpet bicarbonate of soda is a good odour remover. You can sprinkle it on dry, leave for a while and vac off or mix it into a solution and wash the area with it.
Hope you get the problem solved soon.

When we moved in this house, the front room smelled of cat pee. I Vaxed it 3 or 4 times, used lemon juice and all the other recommendations. Sprinkled Bicarb too then vacuumed it up.

We've now had to replace the carpet (40 square metres, I'll let you estimate the cost).

Biological washing powder was recommended to me. I have successfully used 'Get off' from the pet shop though.

I buy a protein neutraliser from the vets- it's wonderful stuff...but you'll need to use quite a bit- but it removes stains and smells of wee wonderfully!

I am going to try the bicarb trick. My children will be so excited thinking Santa has been and left snow in the hall lol.

I am certain the smell is inside. We are going to replace the carpet with wood but no point doing it til after the extension finished. I might have to resort to pulling thew carpet up, but don't reall want bare concrete til we can get the wood down (prob be a few months).

Bl**dy cat. He hangs around our house, tries to get in the catflap (but can't as he doesn't have a 'key' on his collar), terrorises my (spayed) girl cats, and then because of the stupid workmen he gets in the front door and sprays. Grrrrrrrrrr

Be thankful it really is a cat! If you get that smell with no cats around, it might be dry rot!
I am told that citrus oil deters cats from peeing where there is a residual smell of cat pee. Even once you have got rid of the smell enugh to not be aware of it yourself, there will still be traces. Try rubbing orange peel (the coloured side) on the spot (assuming you can find it exactly).

My neighbour told me once that lemon juice and white vinegar in water sprayed on the offending area helps to neutralise the smell, my cats been neutered so I don't have that problem but there's a tom cat comes round and sprays up the wheelie bins...it stinks.
I'll try and find out what proportions she uses.

Last night I sprinkled the whole area with bicarb - looks like the local drugs baron has moved in. Didn't get chance to hover it up. Smell has all but gone today - so whoever thought of the bicarb - I LOVE YOU! XXX

If it comes back ask at your local nursing home to see if they use a product called Saniklenze by a company called Laurdene, its bright pink. Its a urine neutralizer..and is ace for getting rid of that cat pee smell. I use it for washing down our yard at home cos its porus concrete and even if we rinse straight away it picks up the smell of our GS bitches pee. A quick scrub over with this and its gone.

Spray the cat. Get a big old pump-action water sprayer and let him have it. He'll learn he's not welcome, eventually.
