    Ashes 2009

    Some blonde woman has just impressively belted out 'Land of My Fathers' and a slightly less impressive bloke is doing 'Advance Australia Fair'....

    ...here goes 'God Save the Queen'....

    England in to bat...

    The OH has it on the DAB radio downstairs.
    No offence intended to the Welsh, but, why on earth are we playing in Cardiff?! I would have thought Lords more appropriate for the opening test match...

        They want to encourage more welsh people as if the welsh would root for england anyway (yes I know its england and wales cricket board) which is why Katherine Jenkins got to sing Land of our fathers - its all getting a bit farcical.

          Why is it farcical? She was tremendous and it IS the England and Wales Cricket Board?

            I think Jenkins is great what I think is farcial is the politics behind it all, they never used to do the national anthems and they wont be doing them at the other 4 tests.

              Yeah, but why shouldn't they? They did them before the T20s and it was great. Have to say it was pretty good this morning...that's how great traditions begin.

                Because of the reasons behind it, apparently they sang land of our fathers to try and get the welsh element behind the english and then they decided they they should add god save the queen so as not upset the english, - didnt they also sing a couple of hymns, if we are playing as england and wales then it should only be god save the queen.

                  D'you know, I didn't even know it was the 'England & Wales Cricket Board' How bad is that?! Apologies Welsh people Perhaps if theirs was a seperate Welsh Cricket Board, there might be a bit more interest in it, must be very annoying getting bracketed with the English all the time...

                    Can't see anything wrong with that. Why wouldn't they try and get the Welsh behind it? (Afterall they've ignored them for long enough!) So then they try to balance things, seems okay to me. A big fuss over nothing - or is there some hidden anti-welsh feelings going on?

                      Because it was done for political reasons, this is a game of cricket for god sake lets leave politics out of it.

                      Ps I moved to the welsh borders because 90% of my clients are Welsh, my company is registered in Wales, OH is Welsh so definately no anti welsh feelings in this household (see plenty of it going the other way though).

                              Its being played at Cardiff because Glamorgan tendered for one of the test matches and with funding from the Welsh National Assembly they managed to put supposedly around �3 million on the table and so won the right to host a test match, so you had the Welsh Goverment using British taxpayers funded money (not 100% on whether its from the taxpayers or Europe) in a game between Australia and ENGLAND (not Wales) but because it is being played in Wales there is a fear that the Welsh supporters would get behind the Australians and hence KJ singing WNA, as if singing the Welsh National Anthem would influence the way a supporter would declare their favours and why are they only doing it as this event and not the other 4. As you say it is a big fuss but I bet they don't play the West Indies National Anthem if there was a match between Sri Lanka and India being played in the windies
