  • He said that during WW2 butter was on ration and the only margerine available was "National margerine". He says it was comparable to axle grease.

That is what my dad called all types of margarine

      • Good morning.

It feels chilly. I've already turned the thermostat up and will be making coffee shortly.

Yet again, the forecast white stuff never materialised. Talk about constantly "crying wolf." There is no snow forecast for today, just grey, with rain later, and a maximum temperature of 6°C.

07.30am. I'm back in bed with my coffee now. Therefore, the world seems a much more agreeable place. The little things in life make all the difference.

I think I'll cook some of the belly pork from my online shop, in the slow cooker with garlic, wine, herbs, and spices today. This will be hopefully to make some potted meat/paté/meat spread type creation. If nothing else the smell should be enticing. I was looking at the ingredients in supermarket patés and jarred spreads. So many undesirable, to me, ingredients.

I remember, in my twenties, the first local restaurant that I used to take my mother to for lunch on her birthday or Mother's Day. They were famous for their homemade patés. It was my favourite starter, usually followed by "Barnsley chop" and then something gooey and chocolatey.

        Back later, keep warm!

Yes that was the sterilised stuff, forgot to say we had that lot delivered every day by the "Kirby and West", Leicester's main dairy/bottler back then, oh those slow battery powered milk carts you used to get stuck behind.............happy and care free days for us young 'uns back then.

They always delivered whatever the weather. Ours was the Co-op and it was always before 7 am. In later years I remember orange juice in the milk bottles, though it's not something we had.

            Good Morning All
Dull and dreary here. We had a dusting of snow late last night, but it turned into rain. I'm putting off changing the bed linen. It has become my least favourite job. It used to be ironing, but I gave that up some time ago!
            Have a good day

            • My taste buds think that sterilised milk is beyond disgusting. It doesn't even taste remotely like milk. I've just remembered the last time I was unexpectedly served it, in a cup of coffee, (Curry House, North Circular Road, late 1970s). Such a revolting memory it has stuck in my brain for nearly half a century.

                • ^Good grief! I've never heard of that, Jay. Hope your Frank gets spoiled today, Flo. I shall have to find something nice for our Frankie, except that means something nice for our other four-legged family members. And us too. Can't leave us out.

Quick say hello today. Catch you all later.

Have a great rest of the day, everyone.

                        • Good morning.

I can hear the wind howling. It's 4°C and today's forecast is a mixture of rain and snow! I have been out of bed to turn the thermostat up but not opened the curtains and peeped out yet. There could be 3 feet of snow for all I know.❄️🥶☃️

I have an online shop due again between 11am and noon. No substitutions or missing items.

I have now made coffee. No snow or rain, yet! It looks cold outside. I was watching one of the elderly neighbours walking his dog. The dog was raring to go, the owner bent over against the wind, in layers of fleece, just looked as if he wanted to be back indoors. I don't blame him. Brrrr!🥶 The binmen have already been but I'm in no hurry to venture out and fetch mine back in.

I hope some of you are enjoying warmer/nicer weather than us this morning.

                          • Morning GF, morning all.

Supposed to be drizzling today. They got that wrong. It's pouring down. Pah! Hope your on-line shop makes it OK through your weather conditions, GF.

Plenty to keep me busy indoors today, though. Work and bread baking, and perhaps some domestics depending on how the time goes.

Have a great day, everyone. Hope you all manage to stay warm and dry.
