By common garden, I mean the "yellow" onions - just standard ones.

Interestingly enough, if you type "onion" into google, then click images, this one comes up as the second one and is called "common onion"

            LOL, champion what I wonder?

I guess what I'm getting at is that it's what most people think of when you say onion.

I had the opposite problem - I could only buy sets in a batch of 300 - 100radar/redcross/troy. I couldn't just buy 100 sets of one variety! Will they keep until next year if I store them correctly (how DO you store them correctly??)

I didn't know you could store them for that long to be honest - I could, and invariably am, be wrong of course.

Sunbeam, I think you might lose them if left for too long. I'd pop them tightly together in some some compost in pots or in modules, and let them root and start growing, and plant them out when you have room.

Or swap them with someone who can't find any...

The only reason there would be an onion shortage is that the seed firms sold us all dodgy sets last year which bolted early.

Problem is that sets grown from seed that originally came frome bolted onions will produce bolting onions!
