LOL, I thought I'd misread that or that I was sadly lacking in my knowledge of ants so decided not to ask. So glad you did - can't wait to read the reply.

They are a delicacy where I used to live. Eat them live or on toast, just like crunchy peanut butter.

Of the bird species that take advantage of Flying Ants Day, starlings, swifts and sparrows are in serious decline. According to the RSPB, swifts have declined by a third in recent years, house sparrows by almost 60% since 1979 and starlings by almost 75%. One of the reasons cited for such declines is a lack of insect food.

best just to leave them to it then and not destroy ants' nests

I had the flying ants swarming about 10 days ago. Have already had to deal with them in the house because the little beggers come in from underneath the patio door and also come in from somewhere in the kitchen. I am going to have to really fix this problem before next year's invasion.
I don't mind them and won't kill them though one year I had to ask the now ex.OH to get the hoover out and hoover them up. He rang me at work to tell me that the patio doors were covered in them on the inside of the house and did not appear to know what to do with them. Bah !!

I guess that having lived in Kenya, I am used to various crawling and flying things so am OK with the ants. One of the ways of getting rid of them is to just put down salt round their nest and whereever they are getting in the house from. It seems to work for me. Another option I have been told is that they don't like talcum power so it might be worth putting that down near nests etc...

Used to get red ants and black ants in Kenya, now the red ants bite and when they bite, they don't let go. Big time Ouchy !!

There were also these big black and red ants, almost a centimeter to a centimeter and a quarter, bit enough !! They were called 'makoda' in Swahili but I can't find an English name for them right now. These were really pesky insects and if one of these bit you, the pincers would not let go and you'd end up detaching the head from the rest of the body before it let go. These were big time ouchy too !! Angry little creatures...
