Many thanks for all the good wishes, I just pinch myself every morning when I open the shutters, look over the valley into the village with the early 19th century chateau, no matter what the weather is. But it's ours, no mortgage, kids gone (and they don't come very often, they don't like it here, aka have to work when they come here) and great friends and neighbours.
It ain't been easy in the last three years, we've had a lot happen to test our decision to come here. But we've apparently made such an impact in our commune our local French council (elections beginning of March) have asked me to join them as a councillor, no election because the commune is so small, just the mayoral candidates list which I'm on, I'm told it's a great honour for an etranger. Very embarrased when we were all presented to the commune at our new year fete at the weekend.
It's not for everybody in France. If you're young with a small family, life can be hard - the national average wage and minimum wage is low and it's really the retireds who have the better life because they don't have to work tho many do, gites etc. Local Brit artisans are either excellent or cowboys, many came here to get away from problems in the UK and have just bought the problems with them - if you're a cowboy builder there, you're the same here and working on the black is a real issue. Healthcare isn't free and is now being severely restricted for the early retired inactifs but for us, it's worked well.

Seriously though, what a fabulous thing you've done, even though you're not in the best of health (which I only know from occasional references - you certainly don't go on about it!).
Maybe not today and maybe not tomorrow... but I hope at some point to have my Mum babysit for a week or so and set off with my rucksack to visit some of you chaps en France! Will dig and plant for food and shelter...lol!I was feeling part of the scenery

Hopefully we too will be joining the expat community in France Soon Tony. My French is getting more understandable and we just love the people.

And congratulations from me as well (partly through gritted teeth, jealous, who moi>?!?!). We still have several years to wait until OH children are old enough to be parted from .... meanwhile, a sneaky trip in the motorhome might be on the cards!!
Anyway, after all that - well done on going for what you wanted and making a huge success of it - here's to many more years .....Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance
