I've recommeded this book before, but no gardener should be without it:

the Readers Digest "Food from your Garden" - growing, cooking, and preserving (all kinds) and in alphabetical order!!
If the river hasn't reached the top of your step, DON'T PANIC!

I've got a great one by her too - The Basic Basics Jams, Preserves and Chutneys: Amazon.co.uk: Marguerite Patten: Books which is really good but also like the River Cottage one too. Also have a WI one which is a bit useless and a National Trust one which I quite like - Good Old-fashioned Jams, Preserves and Chutneys: Amazon.co.uk: Sara Paston-Williams: Books although it's not really a proper preserving one as it only really concentrates on jams, chutneys etc and no canning and the like. Another one I have is How to Store Your Garden Produce: The Key to Self-sufficiency: Amazon.co.uk: Piers Warren, Tessa Pettingell: Books which is quite a useful reference book. As you can see I don't think one book covers everything and take things from each publication. My latest book which I got last year is a good canning one although it does seem hard to get hold of (I found it in a second hand shop) - Presses and crushers for apples, fruit and cider from Vigo

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Thanks - I have ordered a couple of books from Amazon for the glut we 'may' be having thanks to the strange weather this year.

Having seen this post (and the price) I duly ordered a copy, which arrived today - what great value (1p book, £2.80 postage) it's like new, hardback complete with outer sleeve, looks as though it's never been read. Cheers VC

VC you is supposed to put the jam in jars not fling it around the place with a wooden spoon.

I'm such a messy cook, DK, most of it ends up on the book, or down my front. If the recipes says - makes 4 jars I halve it and think myself lucky!!

Hmm, I can rectify that, a couple of jars of something ,once I've picked out what I want to make (all of it of course...) can be flying your way VC

This combined with the River Cottage book covers everything I'll ever need !!

That's a very kind offer T8Ter but not necessary as the commission I would have earned on 0.01p would not have made me rich!!
Glad you like the book. I've just been looking at my jam spattered copy. So many bits of paper between the pages with my scribbled notes where I've played around with the ingredients or quantities!

My book arrived this morning but the postman chose not to ring the bell so I'll be collecting it on Monday - or should this be in the rant thread.
