  • white crusty stuff?

I pickled some cauliflower a month ago, uses fresh clean kilner jars, having put them in the oven to 'steralise' them.

On checking them today, I noticed white crusty satly deposits on the outside of the lids - mostly appears to be on the edge of the rubber seal. Any ideas what it is? Do I have to bin the lot?

If the deposits are on the outside and are crystalline (ie hard, dry and crumbly) then it is almost certainly a "salt" deposit and nothing to worry about . This is particularly likely if you pickled in brine and/or rinsed the outside of the jar with tap water before sterilising. Once you have eaten the contents soak the rubber seal overnight in boiled water and gently rub off any remaining crystals with a damp sponge before sterilising with Milton's

          Hope this helps

No expert here Piskie but ehm is it salt ? Have you tasted it? Could be salty liquid which has evaporated and left the salt behind.

I haven't tasted it no it might be something horrid - but I'll give it a go in the interests of helping others on here

It is on the outside only KG, at least so far as I can see. These pickles aren't ready for eating until Feb, so I'll have to wait and see if it's ruined them - six jars of the devils I have!

give the area affected a wipe with a damp cloth to remove it, the pickles should be fine, sounds like spillage from when you filled them and then evaporated.

oh definitely, you will certainly have earned a tot after the hard work of wiping the jars.

Glad you asked this question Piskie coz I have exactly the same thing on my kilner jars of pickled onions. Onions are fine though and taste great!
