  • An 'expert' couldn't help - can you?

    I've decided I want a clematis.
After trawling through websites for hours and reading about loads I can't find the one I want
I asked an expert from one of the websites and he didn't read what I asked and suggested three that were no good
    What i need is;-
    1: Shade loving
2: Scented (this is the bit he missed out)
    3: Summer Flowering
Can anyone recommend one or recommend one that they've had and loved? Thanks guys
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

    Clematis × triternata 'Rubromarginata'

RHS Plant Selector Clematis × triternata 'Rubromarginata' / RHS Gardening

RHS say any wall but not specifically for shade. Definitely the other two.

He probably missed that bit out, as even scented Clematis are only very mildly scented at best. I'd suggest mixing it with a Rose, or another climber for scent, or just be happy with the flowers. I've grown several Montanas over the years, but they can be a bit rampant. Personally I like the Tangutica and Integrifolia varieties.

Like what G4 says ^^^^ not very scented - if you're looking for something to mask the smell of rancid cooking oil! Also, clematis can look a bit scruffy on their own so its better to grow it with something else - jasmine?
Just remembered the advice about clematis - roots in the shade and head in the sun

I had one at my old house. it had small white flowers -( this was a sunny spot though), so it isn't any good for what I'm looking for. But it was so scented you could smell it across the garden, pity I threw the label away

Yeah, I'd never noticed any of them to have a scent

You could mix it with honeysuckle perhaps

Can you pop to a nursery when they are in flower and see which one you like?

My climber of choice is Chocolate Vine; Akebia quinata.

No vc and it flowered in summer right through to september (when we moved back from Devon to Doncaster.) so I don't know if it flowered after that.

Montanas are highly scented, white more so than pink I find, but as G4 said - rampant. I've just planted a Clematis "Wilsonii" over Tansy's grave as it's chocolate scented and she got her teeth around a Thorntons Bunny once I figured it appropriate.

We had a Clematis Montana 'Elizabeth' I think flowered in May and was definitely vanilla scented. Beast of a plant though.

Yes, it's a lovely plant is 'Elizabeth' and as you say it has got some scent. I grew it up a goat willow at the bottom of my first garden, it romped away and took over in no time. I'll happily grow it again if I've got something huge that I want to cover up, but I wouldn't try and grow it (or any other montana - grandiflora was at least as boisterous) in a confined space.

I had both Pink and White Montana in a previous garden. As I said before, the scent was only very minimal, but they did have plenty of competition!

D'ya know, this thread has really chuffed me off - I'm longing for a proper garden again. I really miss it!
