  • Not sure I can take anymore...

...in this job. I am on the brink of saying eff off to my boss and walking out. I have never been so close.

He has just come in and basically b*llocked 3 of us for having a pub lunch of 2 hours. This is not a regular thing and was for a birthday. The last time we had a pub lunch was before Christmas and he was there and quite happy to sit there for 2 hours. He wasn't invited as he was in a 2 day meeting and we knew there was no way he could go. After an almighty row last week about an expense claim, which involved what I can only describe as underhand, sly interference from his secretary who knows Jack S***, leading to him lying to us (he claimed somebody higher had overruled the expense claims, which they hadn't - I asked them msyelf) and nearly costing me £60, I have had it. I have applied for two jobs already this week but am wondering if I should just say, 'Stuff It' and do some temping while I find something else. I am starting to find it really hard to drag myself here in the mornings, now and I've even had chest pains with the stress.

Breathe - keep taking his money until you find something else - it's a jungle out there.

I've just found out the the CPS have rejected my thieving builder case because he told the police he stole our money because another job fell through and he needed the cash. Oh - so that makes it ok then?????? Weeks of deception just isn't 'dishonest enough'.

The world and his wife have gone mad - but it is so hard out there to change jobs - don't go until you have secured something.

Even the temps are finding no work.....unless the agency can guarantee you some work in which case.....

If you are not happy and know you will get a job temping then go for it. I am in a job that I hate but I only work one night a week so can put up with it. Your health comes first. If you do leave make sure the boss and any higher know why you are leaving.

Sounds like you've had a bad day sluglobber. I have had more than a few of those myself so totally know how you feel.
The advise I would give however, is that in this economic climate it is not a wise idea to give up a job unless you really have no option. I know too many well qualified people who have lost their jobs in recent months and are really struggling to find another one.
If you can sit it out while you keep looking for a new one and feel free to use us grapes as a sounding board in the meantime....you're not alone you know.

          Oh, that's no good!
Your job sounds like more hassle than it's worth, but try not to act too hastily if you can.
It would be worth waiting to hear back from those other jobs before you quit.
Are you in an industry where it is easy to get work? On the other hand, nothing is more important than your health, please try not to let yourself get too stressed, I hope something better will come along soon.

Do you get full pay while off sick ? if you do go on the sick for 6 months with stress ! it sounds like you are ! so have the time to recharge your batteries, then look for something else, x

I would say the same as the rest I guess. Having been out of work for almost 3 months just recently, I know how hard it is to get a job. Apply like mad, get something else and then go into his office and tell him to go away off.
In the mean time, keep taking his cash.

Zazen, that kinda sucks. True madness of the highest order.

Don't tempt me Louise. I'd be driven mad not working at all, though! Incy, trully this is not a bad day. This has felt like a bad career move from about a month after I started here last March (2008). If a post-doc hadn't taken over my position in a previous lab, I honestly would have phoned my old boss up, as he was gutted that I left.

I have just emailed my old boss to tell him that it is not working out here and that he may need to give another reference. My reference for this position was absolutely glowing (I heard him on the phone, as did the whole office, lol!), so I know he'll be ok. I've been honest and said that it's boss relations, but not mentioned more (or my health). Because my old Institute is closing down, I can't even apply there, or I would. I'm not sure what my old boss' plans are, as he'll be leaving when the Institute closes, but it would be nice if say, he started a lab at the Uni of Surrey or similar!!! I have hinted that I would work for him again (despite his psychotic tendencies, ha ha!).

This is not the time to quit without another job, unless you can realistically claim 'constructive dismissal' (I think that is the term, when the boss makes life so difficult no-one could stand it). It sounds as though your situation is 'borderline' on that one.

re-CPS, or 'Criminal Protection Service' as it is sometimes called. annoying, but not exactly surprising......

Hugs to you. But remember it's easier to get a job when you already have one. It make you seem more employable! Take the stress leave when you need time to go to the interviews

Hugs to you too Zazen. beeping thieving builders and curses to the fact I have to behave with my language here!

Can you 'get by' without your salary SL? If you can, I would just leave. I appreciate all the caution above but heck, life is short, no point in spending more of it feeling miserable and risking ill health than you have to.

Thanks all - I wasn't here for sympathy but I literally had just put the phone down

@ Boble - yup - we have the evidence, the admittance of guilt and the fact that it was >4 weeks of sustained lying but they can't prove dishonesty. HA!

@ Red - I'm trying to get my lovely OH to say some big swear words to get it out of his system but he's gone into 'too much annoyance to talk' mode.

@ Hilary - yup - CPS - those aren't the words I'm currently using. The CPS guy before this one approved it 4 weeks ago so we are going to appeal in the hope he is sunning himself when it lands on someone's desk.

On a lighter note, I have mentioned 'polytunnel' to the OH tonight and he even said where it could go - well where it will go!!! I hate to pin him down when we are upset but gotta take a chance when you can.

SlugLobber - please don't do anything rash....you can last out just a little longer until you secure another job. I'm here on PM if you want to swear your head off at me when the boss is being a **** [insert whatever you want in there].

I know exactly how you feel working somewhere that takes all your physical, mental and emotional strength to work. Please don't walk out though prior to getting another job, try and stick it out and get those pains checked out by your G.P asap.
I have been in a very similar situation in the past and i can really sympathise with you chuck. Take care.
