  • Grrrrrrr, freecycle being to PC!!

OMG, what is the world coming to when you are penalised for remembering your manners....... I've copied & pasted a message received from the mod of my local freecycle group:

    Hello,

You may wonder why I removed the 'please' from the subject line - many
members now are putting 'Wanted please' or 'wanted/would like' which
may well be polite but it makes the others who stick to the FreecycleŽ
approved 'WANTED:' seem rude and uncaring which I'm sure they
(usually!) are not! (If you were to use the plugin (recommended) or
Message Maker then you would not be able to use other than approved
    subject line categories.)

Soooooo, if I'm reading this right, I'm not allowed to say please in case it makes those that don't say please look rude or uncaring......

So how do I relate this to real life situations? Do I ensure my kids don't say please or thank you just in case those that don't say please or thank you feel that they are being victimised for not having any manners???

Where is this going to end...... I wouldn't mind, but I give away so much on freecycle, and very rarely ask for anything.

    OK, rant over

Freecycle - don't get me started.

    I'm not even going there.

But whatever the rant - I agree.

Ah well, that makes me rude and uncaring then. If I do a 'wanted' I will write a message too, which has my pleases and thank yous in there.
Perhaps mod had had a bad day moderating loads of incorrectly titled posts and felt like venting?
Theres probably quite a few of you currently thinking 'what the heck?'

i think it's mostly cos they have a set formula, which they spend all day correcting, so saying please confuses them

Seems reasonable enough to me, don't you believe others might want to put 'please' too but stick to the rules?

Sorry smallblueplanet, but surely if you want to say please, then you shouldn't be pulled up about it.... what about asking peeps that post a "wanted" being pulled up if they dont say please???

I think i might have to put please anyway, in the message part, after all 'manners maketh the man' or woman. cant stand political correctness in extremis, and if you don't at least stand up to it as far as you can, its going to be a long dark road.

maybe instead of accepting silly rules like this, freecycle users all, should campaign to get the rules changed to allow words like please and thankyou, they are after all common courtesies?

Them is the rules, if you don't agree with them I guess that's your choice. To me it seems rude to make the mod's do extra work?

No, they're choosing to follow the rules, you're choosing to break them, which seems fairly impolite. As has been said if you want things to be done differently why don't you see if others feel the same? If they do then maybe you could change things....

Anything like Freecycle needs some rules, they are a standard to judge by.
Added to which there are only a limited number of characters allowed in Freecycle message headers, so keep it factual and brief, the courtesies can be reserverd for the body of the message.
When you signed up you would have been told the rules.
If you don't like them then leave.

Following the logic being expressed here to its logical conclusion could be fun, "I don't like the stupid rule that I should pay for goods in shops. My mates and I had a vote and it was 100% to not pay. No, honest, Officer....."

My three local freecycles are full of people who do not understand "Only one Wanted per person per month." and some of them are not easily pleased either .

We also had one person who offered the same item twenty-one times over nine months, together with a variety of Wanted's, DOH.
Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

Sorry Manda, I think I'll have to agree to disagree with you here as I have no desire to argue with anyone on here, but in my mind, when you are pulled up for saying please in case it make those that don't say please feel rude, then its a sad sad world

Peter, yes, I agree that it is a good idea to have rules, but surely a rule that states that you cannot say please incase those that don't say please are made to feel rude is just nonsense??
